KASS STANLEY ESKRA June 4, 1926 - July 23, 2015 Peacefully on July 23, 2015, at Riverview Health Centre, Kass Stanley Eskra passed away at the age of 89. He was predeceased by his father Stanley (1987), his mother Mary (1992), and his wife, Mary (2010). He leaves behind three children, Kelly (Dan), Tim, and Leslie (Ron), his two grandchildren, Nicholas (Jodi) and Hannah (Ben), and his great-granddaughter, Brooke. He is also survived by his siblings: Mike in Invermay, SK, Anne (Jim) from Regina, SK, and Jean from Enderby, BC, plus numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Our Dad was born in Yawonowka, Poland on June 4, 1926. His father immigrated to Canada first and after being able to save some money, sent for his wife and four year old son. They would settle in Invermay, SK, where his father was homesteading. The farm life was not for our dad, so after completing grade 9, he left on his own journey travelling across Canada working at odd jobs, such as Dad's Cookies, selling magazines door to door, etc. Our dad was a natural born salesman as he could pretty well sell you anything. At the time he met our mother, he was managing the Bata Shoe store in Moose Jaw, SK, and in later years, after transferring to Winnipeg, managed Bata Shoes at Polo Park, Kinney Shoes, Woolco, Sears, and later on worked in the life insurance business until retirement. He made many friends in business and in his personal life, always friendly, willing to share a story, or tell a joke (some were really bad). Dad loved to play baseball, bowl, golf, and curl. He also loved to volunteer for various organizations, i.e. Meals on Wheels, Fort Whyte Nature Centre newsletter group, Festival of Lights Parade, Pan-Am Games and various golf courses in the city. Dad also loved working at the old Stadium and Winnipeg Arena for football games, concerts and hockey games. He told Leslie he would stop volunteering with the Festival of Lights Parade when he turned 80, and he then decided that 79 was good enough. He then went on to curl twice a week at Wildewood Curling Club! He was very proud of all of the achievements of his children and grandchildren and attended a lot of Christmas concerts and musicals over the years. He loved to watch his grandson curl and had no problem vocalizing loudly how much better his grandson was than the opposing player. He was the best dad, who provided a safe and loving home growing up in Fort Garry, yearly family vacations, and always being there if you needed to talk. He loved to travel to Invermay each year to meet up with his siblings. It was his special outing to spend time with them on his own. We would like to thank the staff of CD4 at Riverview Health Centre for providing the best care for our dad over these past five years. We would like to especially thank Kass' primary nurse, Judy, who treated Dad with the utmost respect, care, and compassion. They developed a unique bond right from the beginning, even if he constantly called her Audrey! (She was okay with it). Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society would be greatly appreciated. "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous hand." ISAIAH 41:10 NEIL BARDAL INC. (204) 949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Kass was my first "real boss" as at age 17 I started my retail career in the shoe department at the Woolco Store, Crossroads Shopping Ctr in Transcona. Kass had me working in the stockroom, receiving shipments, shifting stock, pricing everything that came in. Worked like a dog, 45-55 hrs a week, and then came my break. He brought me on the sales floor and taught me how to measure feet, wait on customers and yes....SELL SHOES, which I did for many many years with Kinney Shoes. Eventually, I became Senor Vice President of Kinney and spent some 30 years with the firm, thanks in total to my start with Kass in Winnipeg. A great man, great boss and a man I have a lot of respect for. RIP Mr. Eskra Sincerely, Bennoe Derksen (london, Ontario) - Posted by: Bennoe Derksen (former employee at Woolco (Kinney) in Transcona) on: Dec 14, 2015
