Hilda enjoyed her nieces and nephews and their children over the years and participated in many family gatherings. She was known as "Aunt Hilda" to many in Hamiota and Portage la Prairie. She is lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews, Clifford (Bonnie) Robinson of Orillia, ON and their children Jennifer and Patrick (Irina); Dennis (Pam) Robinson of Hamiota, MB and their children Paul (Danny) and Mark (Andrea) with great-great-nephews Jack and Noah; Vicki Hooke of Portage la Prairie, MB and her children Kayla and Chris (Breann) with great-great-nieces Summer and Peyton; and Sally Robinson of Ottawa, ON. Hilda was born and raised in the small town of Makinak, Manitoba, near Dauphin. She was the second daughter of Ethel and Christopher Vickery. Predeceased by her brother, Clifford, killed in the Second World War; her brother-in-law Paul Robinson in 1993; and her sister Lena in 1997. Hilda took a secretarial course at Success Business College in Winnipeg, then worked at Anglo Oil and the School Division office in Brandon. She worked at Swift Canadian Co. Ltd. in Winnipeg for 33 years, only leaving because the plant closed. After that she did some temp work until she retired in 1994. She received the M.C.I. (Member, Credit Institute) Designation, a credit management correspondence course offered through the University of Toronto in 1962. This led to her starting a Credit Women's Group in 1967. She took courses in Public Speaking, Parliamentary Procedures and Effective Supervision and Administration. She was a member of the National Secretaries' Association. She attended many conferences and chaired several workshops. 1974 marked Winnipeg's Centennial. Hilda was proud of her city and loved the cultural events that took place. In 1974, she was the Centennial Chairman for the Fort Rouge area. She also volunteered at the Western Canada Summer Games in 1990 and the Pan Am Games in 1999. As well, she was a member of the Circle of Fort Rouge church for over 50 years. She was an avid golfer, joining the Niakwa Country Club in 1951. She enjoyed a lifetime membership at this club. One of her proudest achievements was being on the team that represented Manitoba in the Nationals. Golf led to another love - travelling. Golf holidays led her to Spain, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. She also traveled to Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong. As well as golf, she curled, played tennis and badminton. She enjoyed Ballroom and Latin American Dance Clubs for many years. A celebration of Hilda's life will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Makinak Cemetery at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Hilda's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 108 B Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0L1. I recently came across this obit. Hilda was a friend of my mother, Audrey Arnett, who taught at Makinak in the early 1930s. There she also met Hilda's sister, Lena, and Paul Robinson who married Lena. I remember them all but particularly Hilda who used to come to our house for dinner sometimes, particularly in the 1950s when we lived in Norwood which is where Swifts were located. She was a lovely person and a welcome guest. As to Paul, my dad bought a big Mercury car from him in about 1949. It was pretty cool, two-tone complete with sunvisor for the front windshield! - Posted by: James Arnett (Friend) on: Jul 27, 2020

Hilda was truly a phenomenal person who we were so fortunate to have met through our family relationship with Vicki. It was Hilda who introduced Kevin and I to Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg way, way back in 1991. We have very fond memories of watching her get up and down from 100 yards and less. Her short game was just amazing to behold! Spending time with her at the golf course, her beautiful condo at 55 Nassau and in Portage at Vicki's home when Kayla and Chris were young was always so much fun as she loved to be around people. It was always so inspiring to be around such an accomplished and intelligent person. She will be missed by so many people but always remembered with so much love. - Posted by: Laurie and Kevin Hooke (nee Binkley) (friends) on: Aug 02, 2015
