MARIAN DICKENS Surrounded by her family, Marian Evelyn Dickens peacefully passed away on Friday, July 31, 2015 at the age of 85 years. Marian was the youngest of eleven children born to Andrew and Jemima McMorland. She was predeceased by her siblings Robert, Elizabeth, Margaret, John, Mima, Andrew, Janet, Dorothy, Gordon and Donald. Cherishing her memory are her husband of 64 years, Alvin (Al) Dickens; her five children, Greg (Wendy), Neil, Jean (Franco), Barb (Phil) and Patti; nine grandchildren, Claire and Andrew, Cassidy and Sarah, Cheryl, James and Adam, Emma and Kate; and three great grandchildren, Connor, McKenzie and Taylor; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Marian was born in Winnipeg and grew up in Weston, attending Cecil Rhodes School and graduating from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. She attended Normal School graduating in 1949 with her teaching certificate. Marian first taught in Tyndall and Dominion City before returning to Winnipeg to become one of the first teachers at Shaughnessy Park School where she taught until 1952. Marian married the love of her life, Al, on July 7, 1951. After the first two children were born, Al's work required the family to relocate to Calgary (1953), Caracas, Venezuela (1955) and Brandon (1957). In 1972, the family settled in Winnipeg. Marian successfully took on the challenge of raising the family and setting up the family home in these different cities. The two-year adventure in Caracas, Venezuela sparked a lifelong love of travel. When the children got older, Marian and Al enjoyed travelling throughout Canada, the United States and Europe. In 1988, Marian and Al jumped at the chance to live in Brussels, Belgium for four years which enabled them to travel extensively throughout Europe. They returned to Winnipeg and retired to enjoy more time with family and friends. Mom spent many happy years at the family cottage at Victoria Beach. She loved to swim, play cards and spend countless hours working on her puzzles. She had a wonderful sense of humour and loved to entertain. Mom was a grand lady who will be missed dearly. We were all blessed. In keeping with Marian's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial reception celebrating her life will be held on Friday, August 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Marian to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, or a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • Jean: You had the honour and fortune of growing up in the loving home provided by your parents. How wonderful. I am so sorry that I did not know about Marians passing but do see in you, the strong resemblance and spirit that she held. We are all on this earth for such a short time and it is our memories and constant dialogue about a person that keeps them with us always. • On behalf of my mother Eileen Gaul, I would like to offer the condolences of the Gaul family. Marian and Al we wonderful friends of my parents Howard and Eileen during the brief stint we lived in Brandon. Marian gave my mom such wonderful friendship at a time that she felt so very far away from family. I have fond memories of spending time in curling rinks with my sister Lesley and Barbie and Patty. Time has passed, but so many wonderful memories of our times with the Dickens remain. My mom Eileen is feeling your loss today after hearing your sad news. To all the Dickens family, we extend our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely Jennifer Bohan (Gaul). - Posted by: Jennifer Bohan (Old friends) on: Dec 16, 2015

  • To our dear Jean, Franco and the whole Dickens family Sandra and I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences on the passing of your loving gracious Mother. We had the absolute pleasure and honour of getting to know her and Al over the years. Marian was always warm and welcoming to us, and we will always cherish that. She had a great sense of humour, which of course would have been necessary for any family that welcomes Franco into the fold! We know how much she loved her children and their children, that was plainly obvious if you spent any time at all with her. We are all richer in spirit from our time with her. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Paul McKenna and Sandra Brown - Posted by: Paul McKenna and Sandra Brown (Friends) on: Aug 07, 2015

  • My thoughts go out to Pat and her family after hearing about her mother. I have many fond memories of Pat's mom treating us to her amazing baking (those caramel dipped marshmallows...yum) and can clearly remember her little chuckle when hearing what us girls were up to. She will be missed. - Posted by: Maureen (Bridge) Drohomirecki (Friend of Pat's) on: Aug 05, 2015
