Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDARRYL JAMES BARBER, Q.C. January 6, 1953 - August 3, 2015 In loving memory of Darryl, who died peacefully at home surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife Ann Boerner, his daughters Lauren and Heather, and his son Kyle. Also mourning his loss are elder brother Brian (Joyce) and younger sister Beverley (Pep). He was born a prairie boy in Gladstone, Manitoba, and predeceased by his father Harold and mother Joyce. After undergraduate education at the University of Winnipeg, and a law degree from the University of Manitoba (class of 1976), he moved to Calgary to article with now Justice Terence McMahon. After being called to the Bar, Darryl sought further training in the form of a Masters in Law from the London School of Economics. He then returned to Calgary and spent the next 20 years with the Burstall law firm, the last six as Managing Partner. After a period of time developing his own real estate law and property development practice, he joined Bennett Jones as a Partner in 2007, and was very proud of being the legal lead on a number of iconic Calgary real estate projects. Darryl was a devoted member of the legal profession, and was very proud of being appointed Queen's Counsel in 2002. Darryl also had a strong sense of civic pride and involvement with his community, ranging from refereeing minor hockey with his son Kyle, to serving for many years as the Chair of the Calgary Parks and Recreation Board. He was particularly proud of his leadership role in Calgary's Millennium celebrations, and the creation of the Shaw Millennium Park. Darryl was deeply devoted to his family, and the time they spent together was very important to him. He particularly enjoyed their annual trips to Maui, and the more far-flung travel adventures, which took them to jungles in the Far East and the plains of Africa, with many of the world's great cities in between. Darryl led a rich and full life. He left us much too early, and will be profoundly missed by his family, friends and colleagues. A Memorial Celebration of his life will take place in Calgary at a later date in September. If desired, donations could be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (www.albertacancer.ca/donate) in memory of Darryl. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com In living memory of Darryl Barber, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W.
