ALEXANDER GRANT BRYDGES April 30, 1942 - August 1, 2015 It is with great sadness we announce that Al "Sandy" Brydges passed away peacefully on Saturday August 1 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC. Al was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on April 30, 1942 to the late Grant and Agnes (Baillie) Brydges of Manitoulin Island. A retired Warrant Officer with the Royal Canadian Air Force, Al was stationed throughout Canada and in Lahr, Germany. In addition to proudly serving his country, he also enjoyed serving his countrymen as a bartender at various Warrant Officers' and Sergeants' Messes. After retirement, he went on to work with the Reserves as an instructor and then as a Commissionaire at 17 Wing, CFB Winnipeg. In 2009 Al settled in Victoria, BC, enjoying varied Commissionaire postings, including his last position as Evidence Custodian at National Investigative Services, CFB Esquimalt in 2015. He will be dearly missed by his children; Jeffrey (Busan, Korea), Jason (Vancouver), Jennifer Kingston (Ryan) and his beloved Granddaughter, Eeva (Victoria). Lovingly remembered by sisters Eloise Odber (Joe), Colleen Wasyliniuk (Eddy), Sharon McNaught (Robert) of Sault Ste. Marie and Brenda of British Columbia. He was predeceased by siblings Doris Carter (Fred), Patricia Sharpe (Norm), Robert (Bob), Bruce, Ruby Mae and Gail Lidstone (Gary) of Sault Ste. Marie. Of notable mention, his previous marriage to Val Brydges, nee Forssi, gave Al many years of happiness and he loved her and her family dearly. His vocations and love of his family inspired Al to pen many poems that will live on in our hearts. His enthusiasm for family, friends and good food remain an inspiration to the lives he has touched. A celebration of life, open to all, will be held on Saturday August 15 at the Royal Canadian Legion Prince Edward Branch in Langford, BC. 761 Station Avenue. Remembrance ceremony from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. and drop-in reception from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations in Al's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Sands Funeral Chapel Victoria BC, 250-478-3821

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • Dear old Al, We had many good times with him at the WOSM in Winnipeg. He was on the executive at one point, I believe he was the secretary.I would say that he was the 'wise man' when it came to Mess affairs. Very knowledgeable. He was a fixture that was sadly missed when he moved to Victoria... Our sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Michael & Sandra Hickey (Friends) on: Sep 02, 2015

  • My deepest condolences to the BRYDGES family. I knew Al as a member of the 17 Wg WOSM and as Commissionaire of the gate I I took in and out of work. When he fully retired and decided to move out to BC, it was my pleasure to make him a special going away cake. It was a surprise for him, and I will forever cherish the memory of that very happy evening. He was a warm, kind, loving man, and he will be missed by many. - Posted by: Joanne Spence (Friend) on: Aug 15, 2015

  • I first met Al working at WOSM in 1999. He came to Winnipeg last year, and I made sure he was taken care of-after all, Al would do anything for a friend. Nicest guy. Will be missed. Love you Al - Posted by: Arrigo De Angelis (Friend/Co-Worker) on: Aug 12, 2015

  • I have tried to contact the WO & Sgt Mess at 17 Wing as Al was a life member. If anyone can get the PMC to contact the family, it would be much appreciated. I can be found on the DWAN Global Access List in MS Outlook. Look for Kingston MS RD @ MARPAC. Thank you to all who have contacted the family. Your thoughts and prayers are much appreciated. - Posted by: Ryan Kingston (Son-In-Law) on: Aug 11, 2015
