JOHN CHARLES BURNS January 28, 1940 - August 14, 2015 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of John Burns, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He passed peacefully surrounded by family at the Beverly Care Facility in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 75. He will be forever loved and deeply missed by his wife, Arlene Burns, his daughters; Kelly (Chris), Laurie (Doug), his sons Robert (Monica), Bill, John, and Michael, grandchildren; Jenna (Geoff), Kayla, Lindsay, Daniel, and great-grandchildren; Piper and Cohen. He is one of nine children and also mourning his loss are surviving siblings; Hilda, Colin, Diane, Harry and Theresa. John was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on January 28, 1940, he moved to Winnipeg and married his beautiful wife Arlene in 1973. Prior to his Alzheimer's diagnosis, John led a productive and fulfilling life in the Winnipeg and Calgary areas. He dedicated most of his time to his family, friends and to his skilled trade as a butcher for thirty years. He was a hardworking and proud man with a huge heart. John was known for being generous and helpful to others. He was social, outgoing and especially debonair on the dance floor. With his love of music and singing, as well as playing the harmonica, he could entertain family and friends for hours. He will be remembered for his sense of humour, his loving nature, his gift of cooking and his strong faith. He was always happy to share a glass of his famous rum punch, hearty clam chowder or a humourous joke. A celebration of John's life will be held on Friday, August 21, 2015 at his daughter Kelly's house, in Calgary, Alberta. If desired, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Alberta and NWT (www.alzheimer.ca/ab) in memory of John.

  • I will dearly miss all the wonderful times John and I (and our families) have shared over the many years. He was a warm and loving person to everyone that knew him, and would brighten up any room he walked into. Family and friends were John's number one priorities in life and he will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered. Rest in peace, you are with your Lord now.
