PAUL WILLIAM SHMYGOL It is with great sadness that we share the news that Paul William Shmygol passed away after a hard-fought battle with cancer, with his family by his side. Paul is survived by his siblings Dilene Sorochan (Don), Merrill Gilraine (Wayne), Brenley Ogden (Karl), and Mark Shmygol (Carol); his nieces and nephews - Thomas, Karmen, David, Lindsey, Scout and Billy; great-nephew Wells, and great-niece Megan. Paul grew up in Winnipeg but spent much of his adult life in Alberta, making Lethbridge home in his later years. Paul was a voracious and all-star athlete in his youth including roles with both the Fort Garry Lions and Calaphane Cats. In adulthood Paul's passions were Lake of the Woods and NASCAR. Both of which he got to enjoy in his later days. Paul's family would like to extend their deepest thanks to Dr. Hao and the cancer team at Tom Baker and Dr. Oviatt and Dr. Witharana and the Palliative team in Lethbridge - all of whom brought him comfort, ease and even laughter. A private family ceremony will be held at a later date. Paul will be sadly missed by family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Bridges of Hope (www.bridgesofhope.com). Cornerstone Funeral Home, 403-381-7777

I hung out with Paul and Cal at 43 and 29 Jupiter respectively. I fondly remember snaring rabbits in Parker bush, bottle collecting, road hockey and more in the mid60s as kids. --Doug - Posted by: Doug (boyhood friend) on: Jan 29, 2016

My deepest Sympathy to the whole family. It's been many years. Had many names for him, but always Shmags to me, and I was Kern. Many great times had in Fort Garry, Massey, LO Woods, and Beconia, MB. High school spares were spent at Pony Corral on West Side of Pembina, when we would jump into the BUG, and take off. - Posted by: Brenda (Kernot) MacLennan (KERN) (High School Pals) on: Sep 04, 2015

Shmygol Family, I was so sad to hear about Paul. I met him many years ago as a kid at the park on Somerville. He was a fixture there as well Victoria Community Club and General Byng. Paul was always the life of wherever he was and he will be missed by so many friends and of course family. I have lived in Georgia for the last 30 years but on occasion would see Paul during summer vacations at Mark Adams house, he never changed always laughing . I was fortunate to speak with him recently while visiting Winnipeg, Adsy called him on the phone and we spoke. To his credit you would never have known what he was going through! He was a great guy, I'm truly sorry. Lorne Evans - Posted by: Lorne Evans (Friend) on: Sep 03, 2015

So sorry to hear this. While I did not see Schmygs much in later years he did land in my living room at the lake a few years back and we had a good chat. A good guy always, Schmygs and the old Eatons van reconstructed into the _ _ _ _ Mobile will forever remain burned into my memory. Rest in peace friend. - Posted by: rob coghlan (Friend) on: Sep 02, 2015

I don't know where to start .. When I met Paul after high school, hanging with Paul, his family and friends and visiting Bill (Mr. Shmygol)were one of the funnest chapters in my life .. Didn't get to know and enjoy the whole Shmyg clan and friends until witnessing the building and completion of a great family home at Lake of The Woods. We saw each other almost every day (helped when Kim and her sister rented the apartment beside Lori and I). He made me laugh every time I was with him and our interests were very similar which included us playing baseball, hockey and golf together. It was of great help when Shmigley joined our slightly older forces, the Sultans to accomplish to kick some ass in our many competitions against the Hagger Naggers (even in paint ball) The competition was back and forth but we wouldn't have been as good as we were without Shmigs .. And then I should have figured out before he moved west his love of speed .. that he didn't mind me over driving his company cars which I can remember him loving the ride when he let me drive. I'm very thankful I found out one of his passions was Nascar and look through pictures regularly of us witnessing 2 races live in the US south with our brothers. Paul was all booked for the Martinsville race this coming fall .. His hope and courage always was encouraging which always kept me looking forward to our next meet. My sincere condolences to the very friendly and fun loving Shmygol clan. Paul was one of my best and will be in my fun memories of life for ever .. Gonna miss you Shmygs and we'll talk racing again .. - Posted by: Lawrence Enns (Paul was a true friend to many and I was lucky to be one ...) on: Sep 01, 2015
