Date of Passing: Sep 02, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCATHERINE STEWART MILNER Catherine Stewart Milner passed away September 2, 2015 in her 91st year at the Misericordia Hospital. She is survived by, and will be greatly missed by, her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, stepdaughters and stepsons, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren from her marriage to RW "Roy" Milner. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Kathleen Stewart, her siblings, Ewan, James, Isabel, Kathleen and Shirley, and a nephew, John Sprague. Her husband Roy died in 1986. Catherine was born in Winnipeg and spent many happy summers growing up at the Lake of the Woods on Coney Island with her family, and then in later years, with her husband Roy at Minaki. Roy's Florida home also provided them a refuge from Winnipeg's cold winters. Cath was one of the first female graduates in the University of Toronto's Master of Commerce Degree program in 1948. She returned to Winnipeg in 1950 to work as a Portfolio Manager at the Sovereign Life Assurance Company. She retained this role throughout her time with the company. She also worked for her community. In 1955, Cath was elected to the Winnipeg School Board and became Chair in 1959. She was also active in the YWCA, the Lake of the Woods Property Owners Association and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church amongst many other groups. Cath's friends and family will miss her greatly. She had a curiosity of how and why things worked. Then she tried to show us how to make things better. This applied to life at the lake as well as to financial derivatives, the workings of business life and the many Boards she sat on. She was fond of the arts and was widely read. To those who grew up under her wing, she instilled good ethics and hard work. Whatever she did, she did it well. And with her competitive spirit, she found time to become a good tennis player. Cath was a wise force. Her conversation was always spirited, sharp witted and stimulating. Her love of Minaki was deeply rooted. There she will be remembered by her many friends for her stewardship and her travels in her unique Whaler. Her family greatly appreciates all the help provided to Cath by Bill and Sheila Milner, her friend Kathleen Richardson and the staff at Misericordia Place in her last years. A cremation has taken place. A reception to honour and remember Catherine will take place at a later date. Writing from Minaki, we are sad to learn of Cath's passing. She was an awesome lady, and her sharp eye helped keep us in line growing up. Nobody drove that Whaler better. - Posted by: The Kirk boys; James, Graham and Andrew. (Minaki friends ) on: Sep 05, 2015

On behalf of the Antique Arts Club. Catherine has been a member of our club for more years than I know about. She was an active contributing member, especially in her earlier years. We will miss her. - Posted by: On behalf of the Antique Arts Club of Winnipeg (On behalf of the Antique Arts Club of Winnipeg. ) on: Sep 05, 2015
