EDWARD WILLIAM SOBKOWICZ September 13, 1929 - August 29, 2015 Ed passed away peacefully after a short stay at the Seven Oaks Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, June; daughter Joan (Glen) Johnson of The Pas, MB; son David and several cousins, nieces, nephews and three sisters-in-law. He was predeceased by his son Michael; parents, John and Anna; and his brothers, Walter and Joe. Ed was born and raised in Fort Frances, ON. After 10 years of marriage and the birth of his first two (of three) children, he felt the need to continue the education he began years earlier at the University of Manitoba. While working part-time (to make ends meet) at McMillan Blowdell, Ed earned a degree in Electrical Engineering at UBC, Vancouver. After graduation, he worked for Boeing in Seattle on the SST project. An opportunity for teaching Electronic Technology brought him to the Red River Community College in Winnipeg. He was quite happy to continue his work there until his retirement 25 years later. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the doctors and staff of U3-U1 of the fifth floor at the Seven Oaks Hospital for their kind and compassionate care of Ed. As per Ed's wishes, cremation has taken place and no memorial services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Agape Table or The Salvation Army would be gratefully appreciated. We miss you Ed. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • As a student in the Electronic Technology department at Red River College, Ed was my instructor in Control Systems. I later had the privilege of working with him in this department. Ed was a dedicated instructor who brought out the best in his students and who never tried of learning new technology. Rest easy, my friend. Your life made a difference. - Posted by: Will Miller (Coworker ) on: Sep 07, 2015

  • Ed and I worked together for many years in the Electronics/Electrical Technology Department at Red River College. I remember well that in about 1975, he was instrumental in arranging for a small electronics company from California to come to Winnipeg and present a one week training course to the staff in the newly emerging field of microprocessors, thus making him a key figure in bringing Red River College into the microelectronics age. This was just one of his many contributions to the college. I am sorry to see you go old friend. Allan Robbins - Posted by: Allan Robbins (Friend, co-worker) on: Sep 06, 2015
