DONALD M. MUTCHMOR Peacefully, on Thursday, September 3, 2015, Donald Marston Mutchmor passed away after a brief illness, at Grace General Hospital, at the age of 90 years. Left to cherish Don's memory are his daughter Samantha; his sister-in-law Pat; nephews, Sandy (Nancy) and Harold; nieces, Susan (Jon), Meagan (Brent) and Karen (Tom); as well as many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins, all of whom were dear to his heart. He was predeceased by both his parents; his wife Anne; older brother Alex and wife Doreen; and by his younger brother Dick. Don was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on February 24, 1925, the second of three boys who were a blessing to Shirley McLaughlin Mutchmor and Beatrice Mutchmor. His first home was on Garfield Street North. His family moved to the Crescentwood neighbourhood of Winnipeg, and he attended Grosvenor School and Robert H. Smith, and graduated from Kelvin High School. Don answered the call to service and entered the Royal Canadian Air Force at age 18, and trained as an air gunner. After the War, he settled in Winnipeg and began his working life. His career was chiefly with the Canadian National Railway, where he worked in Signals and Communications, supervising the signals at level crossings. Don married Anne Rowland in June, 1952. They had one child, their much-loved daughter, Samantha. Don had a life-long love of fast, beautiful machines. Throughout his life, he would look up to the sky in happiness and wonder whenever a plane passed by. He always knew what it was, and could tell you a story about that model of plane, or the one that came before or after it. Don also loved the cars he owned. He enjoyed maintaining and repairing them almost as much as he enjoyed driving. In 1994, he purchased his pride and joy, a 40th anniversary edition, black Corvette convertible, which he drove for nearly 20 years. It became one of the things he was known for, and he was always so pleased whenever he received compliments on it. Being close to nature was one of the things that Don truly loved. For many years, he and Anne enjoyed their cottage at Lake of the Woods. He also delighted in travelling. Trips with his family to Hawaii, Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park were among his particular favourites. Don always appreciated the small joys that life offered. When he saw a beautiful sunrise or sunset, it was an experience he wanted to share. If he took a drive in the country, or along Winnipeg's tree lined streets, his spirit invariably soared. Don was the embodiment of a gentleman. He was reserved, polite and well dressed. He was also a very loving man with a deep concern for those around him. He cherished the companionship of family, of life-long friends and of folks who were his neighbours, whether they had lived nearby for several years or for several decades. He also sent his concern out into the larger world. He appreciated the things he had, and was always saddened by the thought that there were those for whom life was difficult. Don was a generous supporter of many charities, whose work helped people at home and abroad. Although the last few months of Don's life were difficult, he was brave throughout his illness. He was determined to maintain his independence, and through his strength of will, he did just that. Don also received so many kindnesses from family, friends and neighbours. Thank you to everyone who visited, wrote, called, sat with us or prayed for us. You truly made more of a difference to us than you can know. Special thanks go to the following people for all that they have done during Don's final illness: to Paul Bevel, for consistent, unfailing help and support, and always going above and beyond; to Dr. Jacobs of the South Sherbrook Medical Center for all your care and concern; to Dr. Pat Harris of the Manitoba Clinic for compassion and straightforward advice; to Dr. Leylik of CancerCare Manitoba for all your kindness; to Dr. Fran Violago, your support gave Don hope and strength; to Dr. Jeanne Young, your presence in the darkest days brought so much peace and reassurance to Don and to our family; to Dr. Borrett and all the palliative care, nursing and support staff of the ICU and Five North at the Grace General Hospital, thank you for taking such good care of Don. Don's Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 11, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in Crescent Fort Rouge United Church, 525 Wardlaw Avenue at Nassau, with Rev. barb janes, presider. A private family Graveside Service will be held at a later date in St. John's Anglican Cemetery, 135 Anderson Avenue. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Don's memory to Smile Train (www.smiletrain.org) or to Siloam Mission, 300 Princess Street, Winnipeg, MB R3B 1M3. Very sorry to hear of Don's passing. He was a longtime, valued customer at The Preferred Perch. We will all miss seeing his Corvette pulling up and the great stories he always brought along with him. He really was a very special man and we are honoured to have known him. Our deep condolences to his family. Rest well Don. - Posted by: Sherrie Versluis (Friend) on: Sep 10, 2015
