ROSE LINDSAY (nee FORTUNE) On Saturday, August 22, 2015, after a brief illness, surrounded by her family, our Mom, Rose passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospital at the age of 90 years. She was able to live independently until this time. Left to cherish Rose's memory are her children, Gary (Janice), June (Doug), Stan (Angie), Mel; grandchildren, Sean (Marzena), Dawn (Eduardo), Nancy (Mike), Jennifer (Shawn), Kristina, Allison, Lana, Tina, Alan (Wena), Marc (Sunnie), Jennifer (Mike); and great-grandchildren, Rowan, Czesia, Orson, Gabriella, Diego, Angelo, Adelynn, Quinn, Parker, Calla-Jane, Louie, Zoey, Emma, and Talia. Mom will also be missed by long-time friend Cathy. She was predeceased by husband, Arnold in 1987; stillborn daughter, Carolyn, parents, Henry and Beatrice Fortune; twin sister, May (in infancy), and brothers, Norman and Ronald. Mom was born in Sheffield, England on January 18, 1925. During the Second World War, she met Flying Officer Arnold Lindsay who was serving with R.C.A.F. #428 (Ghost) Squadron. They were married on February 26, 1945 in Ripon Cathedral. Mom came to Canada as a young war bride to settle in the farming community of McCreary, Manitoba. It was on a farm just north of this small town that Mom rolled up her sleeves and became a regular farmer's wife. After nine years of farm life, her husband was appointed Postmaster of McCreary and the family moved to town. In McCreary, Mom became a dedicated volunteer in the United Church and many town organizations. She always took great interest in her children's progress in school and other activities such as - Cubs, 4-H, Cadets and all types of sports. In 1989, after losing her husband, Mom moved to Winnipeg to be closer to her family. In Winnipeg, she became a proud member of Army, Navy, Air Force # 283 where she enjoyed many hours of volunteering and socializing. Mom made many good friends at the club and at her residence, Glendale Court. Mom was very passionate about social justice for everyone and had sincere sympathy for the underprivileged whom she supported through the years. She was fiercely independent and found it difficult to accept or take from anyone. Mom was blessed with a great sense of humour, her favourite saying was "If you can't laugh at yourself, don't ever laugh at anyone else". She acquired the gift of writing at an early age and adapted her style of poetry from the humorous to a deep sense of human interest. We would like to share our Mom's favorite poem titled - After a While by Veronica A. Shoffstall. After a while, you learn the subtle difference Between holding a hand and chaining a soul, And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning And company doesn't mean security, And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts And presents aren't promises, And you begin to accept your defeats With your head up and your eyes open, With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child, And learn to build all your roads on today Because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans, And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight. And after a while, you learn That even sunshine burns if you get too much. So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure That you really are strong And you really do have worth And you learn and learn With every goodbye, you learn. The family thanks Dr. W. P. Grobler and the staff at South Sherbrook Health Centre. Also thanks to Dr. J. M. Joshua and the staff at Grace Hospital who cared for her during her final days. At Mom's request, there will be no formal service. Our family will be celebrating her life in a private gathering. Flowers are graciously declined, but donations may be made to Mom's favourite charity, Siloam Mission, 300 Princess St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 1M3.
