LAJOS BATA With sadness we announce the passing of Lajos Bata on September 5, 2015 at Seven Oaks Hospital at 91 years of age. Lajos leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Ilona (Joe); grandchildren, Angela (Glenn) and Dennis (Colleen); as well as great-grandchildren, Ashlinn, Darin, Brittaney and Christian. Lajos and his family emigrated from former Yugoslavia for a better life and stronger future for the family. Dad was a proud war veteran and he loved playing cards at the Hungarian Hall with his friends. He had a special bond with his great-grandchildren and loved his family immensely. He is now at home in Heaven and will remain in our hearts forever. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, September 14 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Parish, 250 Burrin Ave. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Lajos Bata's name can be made to a charity of your choice.

Our sincere sympathy to the entire family for your loss of Lajos. We know he will be deeply missed. Lajos was one of the first persons I met when I arrived in Canada in 1967. He became a dear friend for many years and eventually Father-in-Law. We spent many nights sharing lots of stories and laughter in the restaurant he worked at. I was always amazed at his knowledge in geography and history. Through all the years I knew Lajos, as a proud veteran, he taught me lots about former Yugoslavia and in return I taught him how to drive the car and stay safe on the road. I always admired Lajos' career as a waiter, in many fine dining restaurants throughout Europe. After coming to Winnipeg, Lajos served many at the prestigious Fort Garry Hotel, Dubrovnik's Restaurant, Montebello's and where we first met at the Ellice Inn. He spoke several languages which made him in demand as a waiter. He was even invited to serve for Queen Elizabeth's sister, Princess Margaret. He always had a sense of humour, and he was the first one to laugh. I was always grateful that Lajos and his wife, Ilonka, were there to take care of my son Dennis, and daughter, Angela, while I was building my business. Eventually when he retired from the restaurant business, he and his wife worked a few years for GB Graphics. He will be missed by us all, but is in a peaceful place now. In our memories...
