MARY TATARYN (nee CALIGUERE) December 26, 1931 - September 4, 2015 Our mother passed away peacefully with her two children by her side, in Palliative Care at Vancouver General Hospital. Mary will always be remembered and we will always cherish our memories of the wonderful times we had together as a family. Mary will be deeply missed by her son Dale, his children, Hailey and Spencer, and great-grandchild Paige, daughter Mary, son-in-law Fred and their children, Mallory and Scott. Also, she leaves behind her brother Mike and sisters, Angie Duval (Ron), Connie Ulrich, Tootsie Michaluk (Ernie). She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews and many very good friends. Mary was predeceased by her husband Nick, parents, Francesco and Maria (nee Masi) Caliguere, brother Pete, sister-in-law Leona, sister Josephine Hogan, brother-in-law Bruce Hogan, sister Phyllis and brother-in-law Steve, nephew Larry Duval, sister-in-law Helen Caliguere, brothers-in-law, Bill Johnson and Rudy Ulrich. Our mother was born Maria Caliguere in Winnipeg, along with seven siblings that she loved dearly and talked about fondly until the day she passed away. When she moved to Vancouver to be with her children, she always talked and missed her monthly breakfast gatherings with her sisters and brothers in Winnipeg. She spent all her childhood years in Winnipeg where she excelled in sports. Sports was her passion and she loved competing in speed skating, curling, bowling and softball. Mary was inducted into the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame in 2003. Mary moved away from Winnipeg in 1956 with her husband Nick and their new daughter little Mary to Kitimat, BC. During her time in Kitimat, she had a second child, a baby boy named Dale. Mary lived in Kitimat for about 18 years with her family and then returned to Winnipeg, where she remained until she rejoined her children in Vancouver, BC in 2008. Mary stayed connected with her sisters and friends, Nora, Eva, Carol, Yancy, Kay and Zalota, in her weekly telephone calls, which she really enjoyed. She loved to hear about all the news from Winnipeg. During Mary's career, she worked in retail with Eatons, The Bay and managed the Canadian Tire Store in Fort Garry, until her retirement in 1988. When Mary could no longer take part in sports, she always enjoyed watching the Toronto Blue Jays, Winnipeg Jets and Vancouver Canucks on TV until the end of her life. Our mother was an avid walker and she enjoyed being outside, making her twice daily laps around Kenaston Estates in Winnipeg and Southview Heights in Vancouver. Mary is now enjoying her walks in the hands of God with her husband Nick and her sisters, Josephine and Phyllis, and brother Pete, nephew Larry and her parents, Francesco and Maria. Cremation and Celebration of Life will take place on Vancouver Island with her family.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • had the privilege of working with Mary at Canadian Tire in the mid to late 1970's. She was quite a character and a wonderful human being. I have many fond memories of her and I can still see her flying through the aisles in her blue smock, always on the move! - Posted by: Cliff King (fomer co-worker) on: Oct 08, 2015
