ELIZABETH JEAN CURTIS
Born: May 11, 1926
Date of Passing: Sep 11, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELIZABETH JEAN CURTIS May 11, 1926 - September 11, 2015 Jean Curtis, daughter of Dr. Murdoch and Ruby MacKay of Transcona, has sadly left us and will be deeply mourned. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Ruby and Donna; husband Dr. Robert Nixon; second husband Howard Curtis; step-son Bruce and son John. She is survived by sister Murdina Brownlee; brother-in-law John DeJong; children Jim, Tara, Fiarra, Cate (Asaf), Joy (Brian), and Glen (Diane); grandchildren Seth, Ivy, Alana, Faun, Victoria, Veronica, Paul, Larry and Michael; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Mom graduated from United College and studied music at Acadia before teaching in Carmen and Winnipeg. She met Bob Nixon and became a loving full time mother when the family moved to Estevan, where a few sunny years were spent before Bob's death. A single mother with four children, she worked hard to provide both heart and home for her young family. She returned to teaching and spent many years at Balmoral Hall School. A cabin was bought at Betula Lake where her children could run free and explore; she called the cottage her benediction. In 1968 she married Howard, a widower with three children of his own, and before long the family welcomed Cate into the fold. In retirement Howard and Mom travelled across the continent in their tent trailer, from BC to Florida, and to Cape Breton visiting family and experiencing the beauty of the country. There were tragedies and setbacks but Mom was always there for us. Her final year was a happy one when she could walk pain free, read a book, enjoy her garden, and visit with her friends. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at the St. Boniface Hospital, the Victoria Hospital and especially Dr. Werier for the wonderful care and attention given our mother. As per Mom's request, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Jean Curtis was my history teacher from grades 10-12. We knew her initially as Mrs. Nixon and were still students when she met and married Mr. Curtis. We were all so excited for her. During those years, one of our classmates tragically lost her father. At the time we were boarders at the school and away from home and Mrs. Curtis couldn't have been more kind and empathetic to that student throughout that year, which greatly eased that student's adjustment. She was gentle and kind. I thought about her over the years with great fondness and 10 years ago I telephoned her we had a lovely conversation. She was a teacher who made an impact. I am sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Nancy Flintoft (Student at Balmoral Hall School ) on: Sep 19, 2015

She led a life to celebrate. Her love of family and friends her strength thru hardship were qualities I admired most. You knew you could trust her with your heart and thoughts and that her wisdom was always sound. She will be greatly missed but to have had this gracious lady in our lives was a blessing. - Posted by: Maureen (niece) on: Sep 19, 2015
