ROBERTA HEWSON
Born: Aug 25, 1950
Date of Passing: Sep 16, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROBERTA HEWSON August 25,1950 - September 16, 2015 Peacefully, at Riverview Health Centre on September 16, 2015, a bright and independent light has faded. To safeguard her memory, Roberta leaves her mother Shirley Hujwan, and her much-loved little sister Dr. Maxine Carlisle, of whom Roberta was very proud. Left to mourn are also Roberta's older sister Linda Spina (Stano) and brother Michael Hujwan (Ann). Roberta was predeceased by her father Michael Hujwan in 1997 and by her most-beloved companion, Josh, in 2012, the absolute joy of her life. Her extended family includes nieces Kate Buechler (Greg) of Winnipeg, Carrie Hujwan (Max) of Calgary, Andrea Korol (Mike) of Burlington, and nephews Matthew Buechler of Ottawa and Philip Buechler (Vicki) of Winnipeg all of whom brought her much joy over the years. Roberta always fearlessly charted her own course, learning along the way and making a satisfying life for herself. From ten years spent living in Toronto working in restaurant management, to four years in Halifax as a hotel outlet manager, followed by two years teaching English in the Dominican Republic, this free spirit always lived life to the fullest. The adventures continued with some time spent in Greece, then to Ottawa where she found a new passion working with the Native Women's Association of Canada. Ultimately returning home to settle in Winnipeg, Roberta dedicated herself to employment issues that advance all Indigenous people in Canada. It was especially through her employment with the incredible team at Aboriginal Human Resources Council (AHRC) and through Kocihta, the AHRC's charitable organization, that she found her true calling. As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and no service is planned. To celebrate her life, a small, private family gathering is being planned. Her family would like to thank the Palliative Care Unit staff at Riverview Health Centre for their care and compassion over these past few months. In her memory, consider a gift to Kocihta, or a donation to Career Trek as a way to continue Roberta's commitment to the advancement of Indigenous people and youth. We were very honoured and touched to have been invited by Roberta to her bedside to say farewell. We learned and were very proud of her leadership in AHRC. Now several years past, we join in mourning her and her mother, Shirley and Uncle Mike. God rest. Вічная пам'ять + - Posted by: Irene and Rev. Athanasius McVay (Cousins) on: Aug 31, 2024

Roberta was my roommate for a brief moment in Winnipeg in the '70s. She was a delightful individual, always on the go, always positive. She was bright and we had great conversations, and great fun together. She introduced me to Susan Sontag. I have some wonderful photos of her. - Posted by: Hope Smith (Old roommate) on: May 07, 2019

It's been almost 50 years since high school...cruising in the '55 Chev...listening to "Ode to Billie Joe" and "San Francisco"...eating pizza in Assiniboine Park at 2:00 a.m. Sometimes feels like forever...sometimes feels like yesterday. Our paths crossed in the 70's and early 80's and as always, Roberta was off to another "experience". I always hoped she would find the peace, comfort and closeness she deserved...but she never would look or ask for... - Posted by: Andy Klymchuk (Friend) on: Dec 19, 2015

Roberta was one of those people I always loved to connect with. She was filled with passion for life and had the most wonderful smile. She was also a skilled and hard working advocate for the causes she embraced. Her enthusiasm and presence will be missed. - Posted by: Pat Britton (Friend and Colleague) on: Sep 24, 2015
