GERRY VAN NIEKERK 1941 - 2015 Gerry Van Niekerk left a long list of very heavy hearts, suddenly late Wednesday. He was a kind, witty, generous, clever, complicated and complex man. He had a way of making people feel important and equal. Gerry devoted a lifetime of commitment to fun, as all who met him will know. "Papa" Gerry left for us some of his thoughts about the people close to him, always gushing with pride: "I had the good fortune to have found love with two wives, my wife Gidgi, and my late wife Ida. They have made my life complete. It was also my privilege to raise three wonderful children, watch six amazing grandchildren grow": Kim my Canadian Spirit; Renee my European Princess; Drew my wonderful Son - the Vet; Richard our Builder; Sean the Entrepreneur; Sue the Designer; Steven our talented Plumber; Jesse the Philosopher; Zak the next generation Salesman; Katie my beautiful one and only Granddaughter; Colin, sporty Colin; and Finn our Director. Gerry had a passion for pets, sports and the spotlight. Sports he shared with his children, grandchildren, and several cable companies. It was the one vice he didn't give up. He left behind Scottie, and a long list of furry family members past, setting a tone of compassion for the entire family. He deeply loved his brothers and sisters, leaving behind Nellie, Ted and William; following the passing of Jackie, Wilma, Cathy, Gerda and baby Jackie. His seemly endless list of nephews and nieces will deeply miss Uncle Gerry. Gerry and the family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Anna Rothova for years of complex and complicated case management, the team at West Kildonan Pharmacy, Dr. Lamba, and all the medical members of the many hospitals, especially those at Selkirk General for making his last stay more tolerable. Thanks to Scooter for being a companion and helper, as well as Gimli EMS and the RCMP. We Love You Dad, KRD! Good Journey my Friend, Gidgi! Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to KidSport Winnipeg. • Was fortunate to have met Gerry some years ago through the Transcona Golf Club. Stayed at his cottage on lake Winnipeg as a guest with about a dozen other golfers for the Vanski Open. I found Gerry to be a wonderful host with a super sense of humour and wit. He was truly, one of a kind. My condolences to the family on such a loss in their lives. I will always remember him as a good person. - Posted by: Robert Olien (friend) on: Oct 10, 2015

  • Dear Gerry and van niekirk family. There are so many memories I remember. Gerry and the ski boat. His frustrations with the ramp and ensuring we could all ski regardless of how many trenches had to be dug. I always liked his laid back ways around the cabin with the pets and bonfires. The fabulous convertible that we used for the gimli parade when we all dressed as gypsies if I remember correctly. The horseshoe pit which my father George loved and looked forward to every weekend. And their love for golf. He always had a hug for me and kind word. I always felt part of the family. May you rest in peace Gerry and I know my daddy will be there to keep you company. With love. • This news was brought to me with much sadness!! I feel like I spent a life time out at Spruce Sands with Uncle Gerry and the rest of the family. I have memories to last the rest of my days. Riding in the many convertibles to the corner store, trips into Gimli for Chinese food, his contagious smile and hamburger soup!! You're always in my heart. rest in peace Uncle Gerry XO - Posted by: Lindsay ( Niece) on: Oct 10, 2015
