DONALD HOLMAN SHAND July 2, 1932 - October 1, 2015 After a courageous and defiant battle with Alzheimer's, Donald Shand passed away peacefully at the age of 83. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Dorothy (Holman); Uncles and Aunts Donald and Merza MacDonald and Lawson and Betty Holman and cousin Iris Penwarden. Don leaves behind to cherish his memory his sister Lois Simpson; children, Kevin (Carol) and Allison; grandchildren, Abbey, John, Aaron and Chelsea; niece and nephew Sheryl Saler (Rick) and Brian Simpson (Connie); cousins Lyle and Gary Holman and four grand-nieces and nephews. Don will be much-missed by his work-colleague and best friend for life, Glenn Duncan (Noreen). Dad was born in Dauphin, Manitoba where he spent his early childhood before the family moved to Rapid City. After graduating from Vincent Massey Collegiate in Brandon, he moved to Winnipeg where he attended the Manitoba Institute of Technology. During the mid-1950s, he had joined the Canadian Air Force and was stationed in France where he calibrated Sabre Jet electronic firing mechanisms. After returning to Canada, Dad joined Westinghouse which eventually led to employment at various radar stations in rural Manitoba. In 1966, Dad joined Red River Community College as an Instructor in the Electronics Technology Department where he "w"d until his retirement in 2001. Retirement allowed Dad to devote more time to sailing (he was a fixture at Lundar Beach on Lake Manitoba), cross country skiing, cycling, helping friends and seeing his grandchildren. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the caring staff of the Riverview Health Centre - Wing 4D and Fred Douglas Heritage House. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donald's memory to Nature Manitoba (401-63 Albert Street, Winnipeg, MB R3B 1G4) or the Alzheimer Society Manitoba (10 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2). Cremation has taken place and a service will be held on Friday, October 16, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). Condolences may be sent to www.nbardal.mb.ca. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Our memory of Don on the sailboard at the lake, sailing back and forth instructing our kids on how to sailboard. A wonderful teacher. - Posted by: Gary and Pat Dunlop (Lundar Beach neighbour) on: Oct 16, 2015

  • Kevin & Allison sorry to hear of the loss of your father. He was a great man and taught my brother Alan and I how to cross country ski and enjoy the outdoors. I have many happy memories of sailing, skiing and canoeing as a child with him, as well as almost freezing to death to find the right xmas tree and cut it down with an ax, not shop in a parking lot for one. - Posted by: Colleen Gillis (friend) on: Oct 13, 2015

  • Don was the first instructor I had at Red River College when I started the Electronics Engineering Technology program in 1970. After seeing his infectious enthusiasm for the profession, I was determined to follow his footsteps and become an instructor at the College. It was a privilege to know Don. It was sad to see how Don's personality was robbed by Alzheimer's Disease. Rest in Peace good friend. - Posted by: Will Miller (Former student and former co-worker) on: Oct 12, 2015

  • So sorry to hear of Don's passing. He was a wonderful neighbor, always happy. Rest in peace Don. You will truly be missed by all. - Posted by: Marianne,Dennis,Wayne,David,Adam Fleming (neighbors) on: Oct 11, 2015
