It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of one of my favourite professors in medical school, Dr. Garry Krepart. I attended U of M medical school in the 1970's and Dr. Krepart was such a dynamic lecturer and great presence in the Obs and Gyne department. Then, years later, I would see him as a patient and was one of the fortunate ones that my problem ended up being benign. He was such a kind and gracious physician and really put my mind at ease. A great professor and a great physician. I shall never forget his excellence in both of these realms. My father happened to have passed from the same disease just last year...so I know how challenging a condition it is and my father Dr. Morley Shuckett also faced this demeaning progressive neurologic disease with dignity. My sincere sympathy to Dr. Krepart's wife and family His memory shall live on. - Posted by: Dr. Rhonda Shuckett (student and patient) on: Oct 27, 2015

I just heard the news today and am in disbelief. Dr Krepart clearly impacted the lives of many and I am included in that group. As a patient, I was always comforted by his sincere and thoughtful care. I am happy to say that I have two beautiful girls (now 9 and 7) which might not have been possible without his care. I grew up in Charleswood and remember how smart and kind Russell was. I can see the parental influence!! Russell, Lisa, and Susan - he was clearly so proud of you all. As a family you must be proud of him too. I'm sure he will be dearly missed and my heart goes out to you all. - Posted by: Cathy Schneider (Brown) (Patient) on: Oct 25, 2015

I first met Garry as a young resident in Winnipeg. He was a great teacher. As I transitioned into practice, Garry became a valued and trusted consultant. Patients always remarked about his compassion - they knew they had an excellent physician and humane person on their side. During a stressful time in my life, Garry graciously gave me courage and understanding. He was a fine person and a credit to the medical profession. My deepest condolences to Lynne and the family. - Posted by: Sarah Kredentser (Colleague) on: Oct 25, 2015

Dear Lyne and Family Dr.Krepart found my Cancer by a CT Scanner when Portage La Prairie did not have a CT Scanner and when he found my Canacer I had only one year to live. He has saved my life and I say thankyou. Your husband was a great man a true friend and a great doctor who took time and really cared about his patience. So when I was told I had only one year to live.I asked my daughter if she would like to help me get a CT Scanner for the Portage District General Hospital and she helped meand a special friend Helen and so did our special Former MLA David Faurschou and my family and friends. So we lobby both governments and got the CT Scanner and the Portage La Prairie Emergency room fixed up which took five years to do.And going to a health meeting. At that time the NDP Government did not think Portage was a city and it is. We say Thank you to your husband for saving my life and for saving other peoples lives and now we are fighting a bigger Cancer with Bipole III Hydro Transmission Hydro Towers and Lines coming 130 feet from the circular loop track at the G3 Elevator and in close proxminity to the NH3 Anhydrous Ammonia Fertilzer Tank on the Trans Canada Highway. Your husband would always say to stand your ground and to keep on fighting and that is what we are trying to do and to save our community and to keep them safe.Your husband will always will be in our hearts and his legacy will live on forever and we will miss him dearly. Russell - My condolences to you, Lisa, Susan, your mother, and the rest of your family, on the loss of your father. From our childhood growing up in Charleswood, I had fond memories of those times we BMX biked, played on your dad's 'state-of-the-art' Apple //+, and admiring the sports cars your dad had parked inside or outside of the garage - especially the Corvette and Mercedes. I also remember the times in our youth where you and I shared time at the HSC where your dad was working, and at the U of W where my dad was - where both of us spent many 'allowances' on pinball/video games, and the usual vending machine suspects. Warmest Regards. - Posted by: Jason E. Samulaitis (Friend of Russell) on: Oct 19, 2015

My sincere condolences - you have lost one of the best. Dr Krepart cared for my mother in 1990. I remember a conversation I had with him around Christmas. My mother was at home, but nearing the end. It was her wish to remain at home and I was concerned about the logistics of this decision. Dr Krepart reassured me that he would be available - even on Christmas Day; and he was. I will never forget his kindness and compassion. May your tears water a garden of wonderful memories of your beloved husband, father and grandfather. - Posted by: Analyn Baker (Daughter of patient) on: Oct 19, 2015

I went to elementary school (George V School) with Garry and he lived right across the street from me. We were together in grades 1 to 5 or 6. As hard as I tried I could never beat his grades/marks. He was brilliant even then. Our birthdays were just 1 day apart. Garry moved away soon after grade 5 or 6 and we lost contact but I never forgot him. He was gentle, funny and a great friend. - Posted by: Margaret Bennett (Stack) (Friend and neighbour) on: Oct 19, 2015

25 years ago my diagnosis of a type of skin cancer placed me in Dr Krepart's gentle hands. One never forgets the conversation. My condolences to all in the family. - Posted by: Rosemary (patient) on: Oct 18, 2015

In the '70s the Kreparts lived with their 3 young children 2 doors from our family residence on Southlake Drive. Lynn And Gary (their title) became fast, important friends to my parents, Erik and Gloria. They shared many a laugh-filled meal at our house and theirs. Later, I was invited by Gary to go on a "road-trip" to Fargo(?) in his 4,000 hp Mustang(?)... the details are hazy. Our purpose - to pickup an American UHaul trailer for their Houston move. I was there for the company and perhaps trailer-hitch guidance. I do remember him as mature, confident, generous, inclusive and kind - at all times. Would drive with him again in a heartbeat. It was an honour to know him - he will be missed. My condolences to Lynn and the family. - Posted by: Victor Anonsen (Friend) on: Oct 18, 2015

Dear Lynn, It is with great sadness that I find myself writing this letter to you regarding Garry's passing. I think that I first met Garry about 25 years ago. We always lived in different cities and there was always significant geographical distance between us. But whenever we met there was always a very close friendship that never required any verbal expression. I always thought that Garry and I originated from the same pod. Our relationships very simple. We understood one another, without words being spoken and we simply enjoyed each other's company and had good times together. I have many fond memories of different trips that we took together. One that Margo and I often talk about was a trip to New York about 10 years ago. I remember spending an afternoon on the second floor of Zebar's poking around the hardware and kitchenware and Garry talking about what items he could use at the lake. Afterwards, Margo, you, Garry and I walked back to our hotel, about 2 km away, while Garry explained the history of Macy's Department Store. It was a leisurely walk filled with lots of stories of life, family and experiences. I will miss Garry, but I will never forget him. I regret never having Garry as a surgical mentor, but am forever grateful to have had him as a friend. Always yours, Barry Sanders - Posted by: Barry Sanders (friend) on: Oct 17, 2015

I just learned of Garry's passing and it breaks my heart. He was a great neighbour and family friend. Our families first met the Kreparts when they moved onto Southlake Drive after returning from Texas. He had his orange mustang and the cutlass. That Mustang was only outdone when he bought the 1978 anniversary edition corvette. I was in awe when he let me, as a newly licensed driver, take the year old vette for a spin around Crestview. At 16 years of age that was a dream come true. Over the years our families celebrated many occasions together. In the summer, Mom and Dad used to put on the barbecue and have Lynn and Garry over for dinner and send one of the kids down to look after Russell, Lisa and Susan. I got to know the family quite well. He and Lynn were very generous and giving and opened their house to me when I needed a place to stay when I returned to start graduate school. And lo and behold the corvette was still in his possession. True to his nature Garry let me use it while I got settled in my apartment. I was thrilled to be driving the corvette again. I enjoyed my times with Garry and his family. He was a wonderful person. Words cannot capture the sorrow I feel on his passing. - Posted by: David Anonsen (family friend) on: Oct 17, 2015

My deepest heartfelt sympathy to Dr Krepart's family. He was truly the best in the world. When he told me I was "cancer free" I called him my "God" He told me that it was patients like me that made his life worthwhile. He has given me 25 years more and still going. I was so shocked to hear of his passing and how ironic that "A man with two brains." ended up with a terrible brain disease. The world will miss him. Rest in peace dear Doctor. My deepest Sympathy to the Family. - Posted by: Madeline hickaway (Former patient) on: Oct 17, 2015

I am deeply saddened to hear that this special oncology doctor has left us way too early. He successfully operated on my huge ovarian cancer, 12 years ago and personally phoned me at home later to give me the amazingly cancer-free results. That is a truly caring, dedicated and yet professional surgeon. His bedside manners always reassured me during my follow-up visits. My prayers and condolences to the family in the loss of this great physician and person. - Posted by: Noella (former cancer patient) on: Oct 17, 2015

Gary was such a great person, we met at SOGC where in the critical years of 2000-2005 I was a tower of strength. Without his commitment the SOGC would have folded as the premier womens' health organisation. From a formal relationship, he the president, myself the EVP of SOG grew a life time friendship with him and his wife. Always available, providing critical advice and support during so many years. Words of sympathy to his life long love and friend Lynn. May Gary rest in peace. Andre, Lise - Posted by: andre lalonde .lise vincent lalonde (friend, colleague at SOGC) on: Oct 17, 2015

Dear Lynn - In the 48 years that I have known Garry, his medical skills were only surpassed by his honesty, intelligence, and above all kindness. His courage and yours over the last few years in the face of a devastating illness have become a model for me and Janet. Lynn, it's Janet now... Matt and I only just heard of Garry's death, immediately went to this page and read every single one of the beautiful tributes to him. For me, it was the fabulous ice blue eyes, which as the mirror of the soul of Garry, showed whomever he was with, the depth of the character, integrity, kindness and grace that resided there. What one remembers often about people, is not so much what they have said, wise as that may have been, but how they made you feel. Know that, dear friend, and re-read these tributes often. You, dear one, have given new meaning to "in sickness and in health". My respect and admiration for your life together with Garry, in all the seasons of life that we have known you, brings me to my knees. - Posted by: Matt and Janet Burrell (colleague and friend) on: Oct 17, 2015

Dear Lynn and family. Shari and I were so very saddened to hear of Garry's passing. We remember with great joy and fondness the years of regattas on Lake of the Woods and the many wonderful department Christmas parties at your home. The two of you together were the most hospitable, kind, loving and fun couple we were blessed to know. Garry's brilliance and compassion as a Physician was a true gift, one which he shared unselfishly with all of his colleagues. Garry was a humble, generous and totally down to earth person. I remember my first time meeting him as a Resident and I called him Dr Krepart and he held out his hand and replied "Call me Garry". That same Christmas he gave all the Residents a gift certificate to the bookstore. Garry taught me that if a patient told you something important about their lives to write it down and remember to ask about it when they came back. He said that way you will get to know your patient and form a bond with them for life. To this day I still follow that advice and pass those teachings on to my Residents. We are currently in Hong Kong and were very saddened to hear about Garry and to not be able to attend in person. Sending you Lynn and your entire family a warm hug. Lynn, During the summer of 1974, while doing graduate work in Texas, I had the privilege of spending weekends at your home in Houston (small, two bedroom, sleeping on your living room couch). Russell was 4 and Lisa was a baby. You welcomed me into your home and treated me like family. I remember those times with such fondness. I recall a beautiful family and the love you and Gary showed for each other. I have heard, over the years of Gary's outstanding accomplishments. He was a man who made the world a better place. I am deeply saddened that you lost your wonderful man. - Posted by: Pat Smith (Kell) (Friend ) on: Oct 16, 2015

Lynn and family - as we have talked recently, you will know how greatly saddened we have been by Garry's recent illness and ever-so-premature death. We have valued greatly our close friendship with you both since our arrival in Winnipeg from Ireland some forty-five years ago. As friends and colleague we would echo every sentiment expressed so well in the preceding tributes. We have particularly enjoyed sharing in Garry's and your joy of life in our many dinner parties, fun by the pool and travel with the Canadian Gynecological Society. Now, Living in Toronto with some mobility problems of our own we are so sorry not to have been able to attend Garry's funeral, but you do know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and family at this time. I remember Garry with a smile. We worked together in emergency in the early 70s when he was a resident.I recall putting on a play for our Christmas party, he the injured Santa and me the ER doc. He was so nervous about his questionable acting abilities, that a double scotch was necessary for some false courage. This man since has spread his gynecological expertise world wide. What a man! I was honored to be able to bring him here to Florida for a Guest Lecture, as my guest. I was so disturbed to hear of his illness and now his passing. He was so well recognized for his work and had an impeccable reputation as one of tops in his field worldwide. He will be deeply missed by the medical community as well as by his loving family. Just two wks. ago at the class reunion we all expressed missing his presence at the event; I always enjoyed visiting him at the reunions and he always seemed to enjoy them as well, including hosting us at his residence. Dr. Krepart took care of my mother when she struggled through her cancer journey. Although she lost her battle with cancer, Dr. Krepart's professional and caring manner gave her hope in the difficult times, and also allowed us as a family to sleep well at night knowing that he was in control of her treatment. Even though it was one of the most difficult times of my life, I could rest my head at night knowing that Dr. Krepart was in charge, and was doing all he could. I have the utmost respect for him. He was an amazing doctor, he was so much more than just my mom's doctor to her. He gave her hope when things looked hopeless and let her know that he was going to take care of her. His dedication as a teacher and mentor to the residents and fellows was evident, as was his devoted attention to the best interest of his patients. Moments in the operating room and on the wards have stayed with me to this day, and his wisdom often comes to mind. Dr. Krepart was my earliest inspiration to pursue a career in Gynecologic Oncology and I will always remember him for this, and the shining example of excellence he set in clinical care, surgical teaching, and mentorship. - Posted by: Lua Eiriksson (Trainee) on: Oct 13, 2015

My condolences to Lynn and the entire family. Gary was one of the greatest men I knew. A fantastic neighbor, a laugh that I will not forget. Professionally he was absolutely first class when I needed him. Gary was always there for me and my kids when we needed a professional opinion. One of the greats taken much to soon. Love you Lynn, Russell, Lisa and SuzieQ, and your families. - Posted by: Lenore Hutchinson (Friend/neighbour) on: Oct 13, 2015

I have had the privilege to train and learn under Gary some 25 plus years ago. This time with him was formative, inspirational and life changing. Gary was the consummate teacher, surgeon, oncologist and gentleman. His compassion, care for patients and his love for medicine have left an indelible mark on all who had the opportunity to train with him. His many fellows have gone on to have their own trainees, propagating the "Krepart way" in their own programs. He leaves a legacy of a meaningful and positive impact on care of women with gynecologic cancer nationally that is unmatched. He was a friend and a great supporter of all that was excellent. He was a great spirit who taught us all to love life and have fun but work hard and give all that you have to what you do. He was one of the best of his time. We all will miss him, but forever hold him in our hearts. To his beloved family who were so very dear to him, please accept our condolences. He spoke often of the pride he had in you all. He was indeed very very special. Thank you for sharing him with us. There is one phrase that comes to mind when I think of Garry Krepart, and that is "true gentleman and consummate professional". Truly a life, and career, well-lived. To Lynn and Garry's entire family, please accept my sincere condolences. - Posted by: Michelle Powder (former colleague - CancerCare Manitoba) on: Oct 13, 2015
