MARTIN BERTENS
Born: Sep 09, 1935
Date of Passing: Oct 11, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARTIN BERTENS September 9, 1935 - October 11, 2015 Martin Bertens, our beloved Opa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 11, 2015 after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his daughter Anneke (Charles), Adje, Kristel (David) and his beloved grandchildren, Mitchell, Abby and Charles. He is also survived by his siblings Anne (Kees), John (Anne), Cathy (Leo), Ria (Andy), Lia, many cherished nephews and nieces and his former wife, and life long friend, Truus. Martin was born in Udenhout, Holland. He and his family immigrated to Canada in 1960. He was a hard worker who quickly made his way from construction to Labatt Brewery and up the ranks to brewmaster. He took pride in his work, had a strong work ethic which carried on beyond his retirement. He volunteered at Victoria General Hospital for fifteen years. When he wasn't trying to be the best volunteer, he was busy with his many loves of life, his grandchildren, dinners out, gardening, woodcarving, horse racing, music and sharing his great sense of humour with his many perfected jokes. The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Riverwood Square, the Palliatve Care program and Dr. R. Blouw for all of their caring and support over his last months. Special thanks to Lia for watching over him daily, Truus for companionship and support, Tony K, Tony R and George for their friendship. Toward the end he was inspired by Frank Sinatra's "I'll do it my way" and he faced his final months and weeks with grace, humour and "his way". A private burial for immediate family will take place as per his request. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Victoria General Hospital Foundation's Miracle Garden.

Though we didn't meet for more than forty years I'm happy to have him on the phone at his eightieth birthday to congratulate him. Dear Martin, your suffering is over now. "You did it your way", as it was meant to be. No regret. Rest in peace and do well over there as you did to us here on earth. So long, our dearest friend. We will never forget your warm smile, cheerful and friendly personality, sense of humour and always ready to lend a helping hand. You will be sorely missed! For the memorable times that you entertained Keefe in your garden when he was small and for the lovely crafted 'Bear' clock which still hangs prominently at our house.
