ELLEN ELIZABETH WHERRETT On Thursday, October 8, 2015, at 103 years old, Ellen Elizabeth Wherrett died peacefully with family beside her. Born on the farm in Shoal Lake Manitoba on May 15, 1912, Ellen was the daughter of Francis and Letitia Wherrett, sister to Dorothy Halliday (Wherrett) (Al) and William Wherrett and beloved Auntie to three generations, Margaret Halliday (Gil), Crawford Halliday (Diane); Adria Park (Halliday) (Jeff), Shannon Halliday (Corey), Jennifer Chapman (Muir) (Leigh), Kyle Muir (Ellie), Matthew Muir (Breanna), James, Benjamin and Adam Chapman; Vivian Muir; Aiden and Hudson Muir. Ellen was a teacher, first in one room schoolhouses (Wolf Creek School and others around rural Manitoba) and then later in Winnipeg as a grade one and two teacher in Glenwood School. She cared deeply for her small charges, and at her 90th birthday celebration several of her former students came to tell her of the impact she had had in their early lives. During her teaching years, she greatly enjoyed playing card games and participating in athletic pursuits, from 'downhill' skiing in Shellmouth to curling in Winnipeg, with her colleagues. Ellen loved music: she was a beautiful pianist, helped her great niece and nephews to learn to play piano and, for years held season tickets to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Ellen's nieces and nephews remember her as an always kind, loving, adventurous and athletic Auntie who participated enthusiastically in sports and always had a craft at the ready and a box of crayons, a tin of homemade cookies or a bar of chocolate in her suitcase. She will be greatly missed. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Golden Links Lodge who took such good care of Ellen in the final years of her life. Ellen's final resting place will be in the family plot at Shoal Lake Cemetery. The funeral services will be held at Westminster United Church in Shoal Lake, Manitoba on Saturday, October 24, 2015. Family interment at 2:00 p.m., followed by church service.

  • Ms. Wherrett was my Grade 1 teacher at Glenwood in 1956. What can I say...she was an absolutely wonderful teacher. The kind you remember for a life time. - Posted by: Doug (former student) on: May 08, 2016

  • So sorry to hear of Auntie's passing. I know how much you loved her. All our condolences to the family. - Posted by: Joe and Lorna Brown (friends) on: Oct 25, 2015

  • Miss Wherrett was my grade 1 teacher at Glenwood School. She reminded me of my grandma, so I always felt a special fondness towards her. She taught more than reading and printing. She taught us to be kind to the other children in our class, and to be patient with those who struggled. I'm grateful for early-life experience with her. - Posted by: Lil Thiessen-Goertzen (former student) on: Oct 17, 2015
