RUTH ELIZABETH COSTELLO Peacefully, after a lengthy illness, on Friday, October 16, 2015, in Ottawa, at the age of 95 years. She is predeceased by her parents, John and Ethel (Grant) Costello; her brothers, John and Donald; and her sister Mary. She leaves behind seven nieces and nephews: Judy (Steve Filler), Paul (Patricia Feheley), Grant (Ali Wassing), Donald (Eleanor Subowski), Michael (Louise Vadeboncoeur), Joan (Robert Grison), Valerie and their families. Special thanks to Valerie McPhee and Myra Penner for being such loving and supportive friends to Ruth. Until her recent move to Ottawa, Ruth lived her entire life in her beloved Winnipeg. Born in Winnipeg in 1920, she was a fourth generation Canadian. After 48 years with the Manitoba Attorney General's Ministry, she retired in 1989 as Deputy Registrar of the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench. Prior to that, she had been the Registrar of the Surrogate Court. Ruth had a long and full life, with so many good friends over the years, including at The Westhaven on Portage Avenue. Ruth was an avid football fan and Blue Bomber season ticket holder for decades. She will be greatly missed by friends and family across Canada. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Leonard's Church (5332 Long Island Rd., Manotick, ON) on Friday, October 23 at 11:00 a.m., followed by the interment at Capital Funeral Home & Cemetery. In memoriam, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation are appreciated. Online condolences and sharing memories may be made at www.capitalmemorial.ca

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • You will be missed Ruth. As we reflect upon the many visits and years spent together. The time you lived with our family for two years after your mother Nana passed away. The lovely chats we shared when I stayed with you overnight when you were having your medical procedures done and the doctors visits. How we laughed the day the movers delivered your things to the Westhaven and you had forgotten to downsize. We didn't know where to put everything. I'm particularly fond of the weekly dinners at Mom's after work and the enjoyable evenings spent together. I enjoyed our lunches at the WAG and will always remember the many years that you were a part of our family. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Kathryn Malcolm (Cousin) on: Jan 14, 2025

  • Grandma Ruth is what this lovely woman was known by for the Hadley family of Winnipeg. She was the best friend of Jessie Mcphee and she became part of our family. The Hadley boys loved her and it was hard after loosing their grandma Jessie to see their grandma Ruth move away to Ottawa. Though she was not here with us in Winnipeg she was and always will be in our hearts. We miss you Grandma Ruth...on your journey please tell grandma Jessie we miss her too - Posted by: Hadley family (Friends) on: Oct 22, 2015
