DOROTHY PATRICIA SARMATIUK (nee MANILLA) April 12, 1920 October 22, 2015 Mom was born in Peterson, Saskatchewan, the second youngest in a family of eight. She was predeceased by all siblings, her beloved husband Andrew, her oldest daughter Susan Rouget, her special sister-in-law Myra Gray and Myra's husband Earl. She is survived by: son Peter (Gwen); daughters Martha Ciccocioppo (Tony) and Alexandra (Sandy) Bell; son-in-law Claude Rouget; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews including Tim Gray and Lisa Watt (Gray); Jerry Manilla and Marina Monostory (Manilla). In the mid-'20s the family moved back to Oshawa, a city that would live in mom's memory as a Shangri-La. Here she met the love of her life, Andrew. They were married there on September 19, 1943, before making their home in Winnipeg on Mager Drive. A housewife and mother first, she was also an integral part in family businesses Telectronic Services, Andrew's Electronics and Tredwell's Music Centre. Mom was pure love, a brilliant light of innocence that shone throughout her life as she raised four devoted children. Her guiding words to us were "love conquers all." Her love of music and dance was always a driving force. She was one of the few octogenarians who could "cut a rug" in spike high heels! In recent years Mom faced many debilitating conditions that would have shaken the spirits of most. However, her quick wit and special sense of humour was with her to the end. The family would like to thank the caring and faithful staff on MP2 at Misericordia Place and acknowledge two fellow residents, Trish and Edith for their friendship. A Memorial Mass will be held in the Chapel at Misericordia Place, 44 Furby St. on Sunday, November 1 at 2:30 p.m. with Father Vincent Tchaoule officiating. All are welcome to attend, however, seating is very limited. Please wear your skinny clothes. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to Misericordia Health Centre Foundation or to the St. Boniface Hospital, Palliative Care.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • We met Mrs Sarmatiuk over 35 yrs ago when her daughter, Martha, first invited us over to Major Drive. That warm fireplace & the many treasures throughout the house represented Mrs. S! Warm, caring, loving, with a terrific quick wit & humor. My husband Ukrainian danced with her in her cozy living room. Wonderful memories..! Years passed with weddings, new grandchildren, airport goodbyes! I know you have joined your husband and daughter now ...dancing and singing for all! • So many memories go through my mind when I think of Mrs. Sarmatiuk. Thank you Martha for letting me know. Your Mother was a gracious hostess and I will never forget her kindness and warmth when I visited your home. My parents adored her. I remember her seeing us off to the dreaded Home EC class with a smile on her face. Years later at the airport when you and I left for Europe there was that beautiful smile. Her laugh-how I loved it. A truly beautiful lady. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. - Posted by: Colleen Turnley (Friend) on: Nov 01, 2015

  • Mrs. Sarmatiuk was a refined, loving and gentle person with eyes that twinkled with mischief and humour all the time. I had the pleasure of travelling to Italy with her and the family to see Martha a number of years ago and her warmth towards and interest in all of us truly enhanced the experience beyond what it would have been otherwise. Her love of music, dancing, fun and life in general were always evident whenever I was in her company at various family events over the years and future ones will not be the same without her. Having known her, it is easy to understand the devotion of her children and grandchildren and all of you have been mutually blessed by the life you shared together. My thoughts are with you at this time. - Posted by: Mary Jane Reid (Friend) on: Nov 01, 2015

  • Mrs. Sarmatiuk was my Mom, Gerry Turnley's lifetime friend. My Mom loves to recount how they first met pushing prams with Sandy and myself as their ice breaker. A wondrous friendship began that ended only when both were affected by debilitating health and mobility. This friendship epitomized the special bond that inspired my Sister Colleen and I to place such high value on lifelong friendships. My Daughter Natalie also remembers fondly how deep their affection ran. Mrs. Sarmatiuk, thanks for bringing so much joy into my Mom's life over almost 60 years of devotion to each other. Big love and sympathy to Peter, Martha and Sandy.May the days ahead be filled with healing memories. - Posted by: marilyn turnley (friend) on: Oct 31, 2015
