NORMA EHA MILLER (DUNAND) (nee SMITH) Peacefully on October 27, 2015, Norma passed away at the Selkirk and District General Hospital at the age of 65 with her family by her side after a brief period of ill health. She was predeceased by her father Norman Smith in 1983, mother Astrid Smith in 2005, and by her first husband John B. Miller in 1991. She is survived by her husband Donald Dunand of Matlock, her son Jonathan Miller of Winnipeg, sister Monica Smith of Winnipeg, and sister Rhonda Smith of Carman. Norma was born October 26, 1950 in Winnipeg and grew up in East St. Paul. She attended Bird's Hill School, Robert Andrews School and graduated from River East Collegiate. After graduation she attended the University of Winnipeg, and moved to Halifax, NS where she met her first husband, John. They married in Pictou, NS and moved back to Winnipeg where they gave birth to their son Jonathan. She was a stay at home mother who raised her son. At the age of six months it was discovered that Jonathan was deaf. Norma was very keen on ensuring that he had the best education and opportunities possible. She supported him in every aspect of his life, especially with regards to Literacy, which she was very passionate about. Eventually it was time to re-enter the work force where she accepted full time employment at Veteran's Affairs where she remained for 21 years until her retirement in 2009. She met her second husband in 1998 and enjoyed the company of friends and family, was involved in Toastmasters and spent many summers at their cottage in Matlock, MB. Norma married Don at Kildonan Park in September of 2009. After Norma's retirement they moved to their cottage in Matlock where they resided year-round. Norma spent her last few years happily puttering around in her flower and vegetable gardens, looking after three adorable cats, Jasper, Charlie, and Lily and doting on her family and friends. Norma and Don did a lot of travelling and especially fell in love with Cuba where they returned on numerous occasions. Norma often reminisced about her trip to London, Paris and Edinburgh in 2012 with Don and her son Jonathan. We would like to thank the staff at the Selkirk and District General Hospital for their exceptional care. A Celebration of Life will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg, MB on Friday, November 6 at 11:00 a.m. The interment will take place after the service at Sunnyside Cemetery, 64087 Heatherdale Road (3.4 kilometers west of Oakbank in the RM of Springfield). Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I'm so sorry the world has lost Norma. She was a good soul with a compassionate heart. We both worked for Veterans Affairs for over 20 years, but I only really got to know her while training her to take over my position for awhile. She was a genuine, kind, unassuming lady with a great sense of humour. I know she will be missed. My condolences to her family and good friends. - Posted by: Kathy Swanston (Former co-worker) on: Jan 04, 2016

  • Norma was one of the 'kids from Birds Hill' who took me in as a friend when I had just moved to the area and was a bit of a lost soul. She was kind and smart and funny and we had such a good time in those years. We went in different directions after graduation but I always thought that someday we might meet and still be friends. My very great sympathy to her family and loved ones. - Posted by: Diane Sarginson (Friend from River East) on: Nov 22, 2015

  • We were very sad to get the news about Norma. Our family really enjoyed the time we have spent with her over the past few years. She had a great sense of humor and loved the simple things in life, taking care of her garden and her cats and spending time with family and friends. On one of her last visits with us we took a shopping trip to IKEA, toured the new Holes greenhouse and learned how to make holiday planters. We will all miss her. - Posted by: Gail Rokosh (Sister-in-law) on: Nov 04, 2015

  • I worked with Norma for a few years at Veterans affairs. We became friends and even travelled together. Our trip to Mexico was monumental! Although I haven't talked to Norma for a few years, I will remember her great sense of humour and my admiration for her acceptance of others for who they were and always managed to see the best. Godspeed on your new journey Norma. - Posted by: Tina Smillie (Former co-worker and friend) on: Nov 03, 2015

  • I was deeply saddened to learn of Norma's passing. We were co-workers for a brief time at Veteran's Affairs, then became friends. There was a small group of us who would go out "on the town" on a weekly basis and we always had fun together. Although I haven't been in contact with Norma for the last few years, I have often thought about her and wished we could have reconnected. Norma will be missed by all of us who had the good fortune to get to know her. - Posted by: Syva-Lee Wildenmann (former co-worker and friend) on: Nov 02, 2015

  • I am so sad to hear this. It's been many years since I worked with Norma at Veterans Affairs but I still think of her now and again. She had a wonderful, kind, and caring spirit and was so much fun. We had a lot of laughs. - Posted by: Kelly Keith (Former co-worker) on: Nov 01, 2015
