HELEN THERESE MCMENEMY (nee LAHAY) God called Helen peacefully on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at the age of 84. She is now reunited in Heaven with her loving husband of 61 years, William C. (Bill) McMenemy (2012). Cherished by her three daughters and families: Diane and Michael Papst, their children Victoria, Henry and Joseph; Katie and David Woelfle, their daughters Lindsey and Rebecca; and Colleen and Glen McGee and their sons Ken (wife Janet), and Sean. Helen was born in York Township (Toronto) Ontario and was the youngest of nine children. As a young lady, Helen was an active volunteer with the St. John Ambulance Brigade. It was during those activities that she met Bill. She and Bill received certificates of commendation for their efforts during the S.S. Noronic disaster in Toronto Harbour in 1949. Helen and Bill were married at St. James Catholic Church in Toronto in 1951 and lived in various parts of southern Ontario following advances in Bill's professional career. After 33 years in the Bramalea/Brampton area, in 1998 Helen and Bill relocated to Winnipeg to be nearer to family Over the years Helen continued to give generously of her time volunteering as a leader with Girl Guides of Canada, as a Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic worker and as a driver for the Canadian Cancer Society and as an organizer of Daffodil Days. In 1986 Helen fulfilled her dream and proudly graduated from the University of Toronto with a general B.A. majoring in Canadian Studies. Over the years Helen was an active member of her Church community being involved in the CWL, RCIA and Bible Study. One hobby Helen enjoyed and shared with others was her quilt making. Together Helen and Bill loved to travel, play cards, golf, and go 10 pin bowling. On behalf of the family, we would like to thank the staff of Rosewood (Kenwood) and Victoria General Hospital (Fourth Floor) for their kindness and compassion while Helen was in their care. In keeping with Helen's wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Manitoba Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Science. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7 at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, Winnipeg. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will be at a later date. If friends wish, donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (193 Sherbrook Street Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7 or http://www.cancer.ca/en/?region=mb) or Victoria General Hospital Foundation (2340 Pembina Highway,Winnipeg, MB R3T 2E8 or www.vgh.mb.ca/foundation/) or to a charity of your choice.
