ELIZABETH VERNA AFANASIEV (nee RADUL) A notice in memory of our mother, wife, sister, aunt and friend, Elizabeth (Betty) Afanasiev, who left us to join Walter, who predeceased her in April 2005, on October 26, 2015. She is survived by her and Walter's three children - Russell, Lisa and Philip - as well as by many extended family and friends. In addition to Walter, she was also predeceased by her parents, William and Verna, her brothers and sisters: George, Ann, Gordon, Ellen and Jackie, and also many other family and friends. Betty was born in East Braintree, MB on a cold January 22, 1935. After school she followed her brothers and sisters and moved to Winnipeg, where she began a life that soon included Walter, who she married in 1954. Betty and Walter were married for 61 years. Walter was by her side for 51 of those years, for the final 10 she was content to have him in her head and her heart. She had a number of jobs and more than a few entrepreneurial efforts to keep her busy along the way, along with being our mother and a wife. Her strength of will was unmatched and her love of life equally balanced with Walter's. As earlier notified, please join family and friends on Thursday, November 5 at Bronx Park Community Centre, 720 Henderson Highway from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Leclaire Brothers 475 Provencher Blvd. in care of arrangements, 204-775-2220. I would like to thank all those in the health care field: CancerCare, St. Boniface, Riverview and all those in the extended care family that took such good care on Betty in 2015. A hello and thank you to all family (in particular my cousin Jim and wife Karen for their many visits and help they provided Betty), and friends, so many to acknowledge, everyone in Winnipeg and across beautiful Canada, and of course the Baker Potts/Harlingen crowd, with whom both Betty and Walter enjoyed so many wonderful years snow-birding; here in particular a big thank you to Doris, Penny and Dave, who were like family for Betty. There is so much more to say, so many more to thank, but it will stay unsaid til another day.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Betty was always so kind to us. We were both so lucky to see her and Walter in Winnipeg and also in Texas. Betty's heart was an inspiration and Betty, we think of you often. We will never forget our Grey Cup visits, playing dominoes on Henderson, or going for a drive for the sights of Brownsville ... You are missed by many :) .... - Posted by: Bernie and Marlene (Friends) on: Jan 18, 2016

  • I have such wonderful memories of sitting around the kitchen table on Helmsdale with you and your Mom, Lisa. All of our girls group would gather at that table before, during and after school and smoke cigarettes, drink coffee and talk about boys! Such simple and happy times. Mrs. A was so much fun to be around and she always made me feel welcome in her home. Rest in Peace, dear Betty...till we meet again. - Posted by: Leah Dupuis (nee McWhinney) (Friend) on: Nov 04, 2015

  • Dear dear Betty, such fond memories of her laughter & great spirit. Our many trips to Winnipeg when young always included family get togethers, laughter & smiles. When she would come out to Edmonton or Innisfail by bus we would here about her great visits with people on her route. She will be missed but imagine the family party they are having up in heaven with all the dearly departed. Our deepest sympathy to family. - Posted by: Cheryl Gauthier (née:White) (Great niece) on: Nov 03, 2015
