MURRAY CHARLES BATER Peacefully, on Sunday, November 1, 2015, Murray Charles Bater passed away at Oakview Place Personal Care Home at the age of 83 years, surrounded by family. Remaining to cherish Murray's memory are his wife, Dianne; daughter Wendy; grandson Jim; granddaughter Kristin; Dianne's daughters, Christine and Andrea and their families, including several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as his sisters, Joyce and Audrey. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Jim, and many brothers and sisters. On May 13, 1932, Murray was born in Kipling, Saskatchewan and grew up in Fleming, Saskatchewan, the son of a United Church minister. Following in his father's footsteps, he studied to become a United Church minister, however ended his career as the Chief Executive Officer of the Manitoba Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. Growing up, Murray was heavily involved in sports. He was invited to the New York Rangers training camp but unfortunately broke his leg playing baseball that summer and was unable to attend. Murray was recognized for many achievements throughout his working career. Some of these include: a citation from the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce, The 125th Anniversary Commemorative Medal and a citation from the Grand Lodge of Free Masons of Manitoba for outstanding service to cancer patients. This was the only time such a citation has been given outside the Lodge of Free Masons. Murray enjoyed his summers at Sandy Hook biking and socializing with his many friends. He also loved art and became an accomplished painter. Murray continued to curl and golf well into his 70s and often attended professional sport team games in Winnipeg. He was a quiet, gentle man who accomplished much during his lifetime. Murray loved to give while asking nothing in return. His humour, contagious laughter and a willingness to help others will be remembered forever. He will be missed by many including his best friend Don. A celebration of Murray's life will be held on Friday, November 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 5335 Portage Avenue, Headingley, Manitoba. Special thanks are extended to the staff and volunteers of Oakview Place Personal Care Home for their many hours of care and enjoyment they provided Murray during his stay. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society of Manitoba, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Murray spent a lot of time at our farm, enjoying my mother's cooking, socializing with my brothers, getting his pay cheque (Dad was the treasurer), and leaving his dog while he went to the city or home to visit his family. People in the Armley district still talk about what a nice fellow he was. Some even mention the 3 act play we put on to raise money for the church---Murray was the star of the show! Don Wilson just told me of Murray's passing this morning, as I live in Watrous now. I'm so sorry for you loss. • Diane, sorry I was unable to attend Murray's farewell service. My sympathies go out to you and yours. He was a big hearted man and was kind to me. He will be missed, hope all is well in your life Norman Gyles - Posted by: Norman Gyles () on: Nov 07, 2015
