Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • John was well respected for his expertise in recording the proceedings of criminal trials in the Courts of Manitoba. He was also expert in the sport he truly enjoyed which was target shooting. He was quite remarkable in pinpointing the 'bulls-eye' when shooting with any variety of firearms. He was also patient with newcomers to the sport and his instruction to them was evident in the spectacular targets they produced in a short time. John would fairly adjudicate scores on targets at various police related shooting contests and was a guest shooter at several police ranges. He would invite me and others to join him at the civilian range where he had been a longtime member. Above all, John was a 'nice guy' to spend time with. I moved to B.C. after I retired 28 years ago and occasionally would return to Winnipeg to visit family and friends. John would find time to have lunch with me and we would talk about those days prior to 'our best before date.' Yes, he was articulate and had a great sense of humour. - Posted by: R. G. • John was a dear friend that I will always remember well. I am much younger than him but we met at a firearm club and he took me under his wing to teach me a lot about the sport. It turned out he also taught me a lot about life... I will always admire that he took so much time to help others. - Posted by: Ed Buell (Friend) on: Nov 12, 2015

  • My condolences to John's family. He was a good friend over many years.I remember John came to my place near Wawanesa many years ago and was delighted to have a 'farm' supper cooked by my wife Lynne. In later years we often met at shooting events and he was always cheerful and kind. - Posted by: Keith ELder (Friend) on: Nov 11, 2015

  • My deepest sympathy to you in the loss of John. John also gave me a copy of your mom's banana torte recipe along with her cheesecake recipe and whenever I make them I remember his kindness. It was a pleasure to work with John, a real gentleman. I know he will be missed. - Posted by: Doreen Amos (Court reporter colleague) on: Nov 11, 2015

  • I worked with John for many years. He was a good soul, a nice man. I have fond memories of John - Posted by: Roberta Baty (court reporter colleague) on: Nov 10, 2015

  • I started court reporting in 1979 and it was a terrifying learning curve. John was always so cheerfully willing to take the time, no matter how busy he was, to answer my dumb questions and offer advice and encouragement, and I am very grateful for his many kindnesses. I'm also grateful to John's late wife, Georgia, for so generously providing us, his co-workers, with her wonderful banana torte recipe -- it's still my family's all-time favourite dessert, and I think of them both each time I make it for all our special occasions. John always had time for everyone and never said "no" when asked to help. He was a very sweet man, most generous of spirit. Please accept my sincere condolences. - Posted by: Leslie Harris (Court reporter colleague) on: Nov 10, 2015
