Date of Passing: Nov 08, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEVELYN JOAN VEITCH August 5, 1955 - November 8, 2015 It is with heavy hearts, that the family of Evelyn Veitch announce her peaceful passing, after a brief battle with cancer. She is survived by her mother Shan Boivin (Marc), her brother Ken (Dianne), her nephew Tim (Morgan), cousin Jennifer (Jon, Harry), cousin Corinne Campbell (Wes), and her best friends, Carol Gardner (Greg, Jeremy, Sam), Chris McDougall (Bryan), and Jennifer Johnson (Orey). Evelyn was predeceased by her father Ted Veitch, her much adored niece Carolyn Veitch-Rakowski, her grandparents, Jack and Evelyn Veitch and Roonie McKay, aunt Rita Foord, uncle Ron Veitch (Priscilla), and good friend Marshall Gardner. Ev was born in Selkirk, Manitoba, and spent her childhood years in Petersfield and Selkirk. She graduated from the Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive High School, beginning her career, at the age of 18 in the banking industry. After completing her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Winnipeg, and being an avid reader herself, it was a natural fit that Evelyn ventured into the publishing world, where she excelled in a career of Higher Education publishing. Starting as a Sales Rep for Irwin Dorsey of Canada, she won numerous awards for Rep of the Year for outstanding sales, editorial performance and customer service. In 1992, she moved to Toronto, after being promoted to Sponsoring Editor for Times Mirror Professional Publishing. Under her management, her texts performed beyond expectations, and she was promoted to Senior Sponsoring Editor, and later to Editor in Chief, after Times Mirror was acquired by McGraw Hill Ryerson. In 2001, Ev accepted the position as Vice President/Editorial Director for Nelson Education. It was here, under her leadership, that Nelson's Canadian publishing program saw tremendous growth, published numerous successful first editions, and expanded into a number of new disciplines. Evelyn was highly respected and admired as a leader, mentor, negotiator, colleague and friend. To her many authors, she was dedicated, hardworking, loyal and fair. To her family and friends at home, Ev was fun, loving, gentle, kind and generous. Her visits home, were always greeted with excitement by her only niece and nephew, where she focused on family and friends. She would seek and value her big brothers advice on business strategies, but always remained ferociously independent. Ev enjoyed her travels to many parts of the world, making lasting friendships, wherever she settled. The family would like to thank the medical staff at the Lady Minto Hospital on Salt Spring Island and the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, for her care. Special thanks to Rod Banister, Sarah Iles, and Wendy and Bruce Eggertson for their valued friendship and support of Evelyn and her family during this difficult time. As requested by Evelyn, cremation has taken place, and there will be no formal service. Those wishing to donate in her memory, please consider Bookmates Inc., a charitable organization that supports parents and young children, with the development of literacy and learning skills, through intergenerational programs, 623 Erin Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3G 2W1.

Words cannot express how saddened I am to hear about my dear friend Ev. Although we worked together years ago, that was only the beginning of a wonderful friendship. Her warm spirit, her kindness, all the laughs, and great memories, will remain in my heart always. Love you much, my friend. Until we meet again. xo - Posted by: Marlene Luscombe (friend) on: Nov 30, 2015

I am so sorry to hear of her passing. Cancer is just such a horrible thing..wish they would find a cure. Evelyn was a beautiful little girl when I knew her and I am sure she was a wonderful person in her adult years. I had the pleasure and extreme honour of working with Ev at Nelson for many years. Ev was a mentor to me. She was always generous with her time and always happy to share her expertise. Ev was courageous and would take chances publishing in areas Nelson didn't traditionally publish in. Ev was a tremendous public speaker and could add great value to any meeting or conversation. Ev was passionate about her work and her friendships. She always was very encouraging and helped us all dream bigger. Ev also liked to have fun and loved to laugh. Ev motivated me to reach for the stars-now when I look up to the stars I'm certain Ev will have her own b/c her tremendous light touched so many of us. I'm also hoping there is a shoe store in heaven b/c Ev loved nice shoes. She will be so greatly missed! - Posted by: Pamela Armstrong-Duprey (Friend and former co-worker) on: Nov 23, 2015

I worked with Ev at Nelson. She was wickedly smart, had a quick wit and delighted in so much of her life, and the lives of the people around her. I will remember her for always asking intelligent questions, and listening to the response. - Posted by: Ann Byford ((friend and co-worker)) on: Nov 23, 2015

I was shocked and saddened to read about Ev's passing. I worked with her in the late 70's and have a lot of very fond memories of the good times we shared. We lost contact with Ev when she moved away, until she sent us a XMAS card several years ago. Then we did stay in touch through email. Ev came to Wpg a few years ago and we were able to get together with some of the gang that we worked with at the Credit Union. Ev was a great person and our thoughts go out to her family and friends. - Posted by: Rick Charles (Friend and former co-worker) on: Nov 21, 2015
