Born in Dauphin Manitoba Bill is survived by his loving wife Norma (Fitzpatrick} of 70 years and four sons, William, James (Pamela), Robert (Kathy), and Kelly (Kristine) along with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Bill was predeceased by his mother Elsie and his father Gordon Smith as well as his two brothers, Gordon, George and sister Jean (McElrea) Bill left Dauphin and joined the Canadian Navy as a DEMS gunner during the Second World War. During the war he met the love of his life Norma (Fitzpatrick) in Montreal In his long career in the food industry Bill was General Manager of Brandon Packers. His next endeavour was with Canada Safeway as a store manager opening new locations In Dryden, Ontario and the first Safeway in eastern Canada in Sault Ste. Marie. Always wanting to live on the west coast he opened a grocery store in the Kerrisdale area of Vancouver. After this they moved and lived in Port McNeil for many years before finally settling in Sidney area. Bill was involved in the community working at the Sidney food bank and involvement with various Lions club locations especially focusing on the sight programs. In his failing health he continued to visit his wife every day at the care home. In life Bill showed his children and all that new him that love can exist through his love and dedication to his wife Norma. The family will not be having a formal funeral and request that everyone celebrate Bills' life in their own way. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to Beckley Farms Foundation, 530 Simcoe St., Victoria, BC V8V 4W4. (Alzheimer care home).
