HENRY SCHUR Henry Schur was born on August 6, 1928 in the Mink Creek district, near Ethelbert, MB, to Karl and Mary (Yellowega) Schur. He was the youngest child, and only brother, to sisters Nellie, Jean and Anne. He received his education at the Taras School and then worked at the Red Lake, ON mine before returning to farm with his father. In 1952, he married Jean Krawec of Weiden, MB and they had a daughter, Carolyn, and a son, Willard. The young family farmed in the Ethelbert district until moving to Dauphin in 1961, where Henry worked as a greenskeeper at the Dauphin golf course for three years. The lure of farming proved too strong and the Schurs acquired a farm two miles south of Ethelbert (17-29-21) - their home for the next 32 years, and birthplace of their youngest son, Danny. With Ethelbert central to a large extended family, the Schur family farm was legendary for its Ukrainian warmth and hospitality. Many nieces, nephews and family friends enjoyed visiting the mixed farm, playing with the animals and riding on the tractor with "Uncle Henry". He was always friendly, patient, industrious and, above all, loyal. He was one of the first of his generation to conduct large-scale hog farming. He also had a thirty year career as a school bus driver through which he influenced the lives of generations of rural school children and enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow bus drivers. Henry's life revolved around friends, family and community. A truly social man, he could have a conversation with anyone...and did. He was an avid participant in church life at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, Zoria, Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ethelbert, and, upon retirement to Dauphin in 1996, at the Ukrainian Catholic Parish of the Resurrection. In 2012, Henry and Jean moved to Winnipeg, residing at St. John's Haven and attending Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church. Henry passed away on December 5, 2015, after a brief stay in hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Karl and Mary, and his sisters Anne, Nellie and Jean and their husbands. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of sixty-three years, Jean, children Carolyn (Dave Fetsch) of Saskatoon, Willard (Joyce Boerchers) of Ethelbert, MB and Danny (Juliane Schaible) of Winnipeg. Gido loved and doted on his grandchildren: Andrea (Daniel Camaclang), Kevin (Errin Fast), Jonathan Fetsch and Anna and Stefan Schaible-Schur. Prayers will be held at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church at 1001 Grant Avenue in Winnipeg on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. The funeral will take place in Dauphin, MB at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection at 801 Jackson Street on Saturday, December 12 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Dauphin. Funeral arrangements care of Sneath Strilchuk Funeral Services, Dauphin. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, Elevator Fund. Vichnaya Pamyat - Eternal Memory

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • We had been introduced to Henry and Jean by their son, Danny, on a few occasions while enjoying dim sum at theirs and our favourite place. Although our conversations were brief I was touched by Henry's warmth and interest in people. Sometimes it does not take long to read a person and Henry struck me as a very genuine person . I extend to the family our sincerest condolences. Vichnaya Pamyat. - Posted by: Myron Tarasiuk (None to speak of) on: Dec 21, 2015

  • Only meet Gido 5 times times, the last time was on Willard's birthday where he told us a few farm stories, and about his love for donuts. I got to know him better through Andrea's stories. I know she loved their coffee dates so much. She always made him sound so funny. Willard also had a lot of funny stories to tell about their childhood on the farm. He leaves a wonderful legacy in his three children, and 5 grandchildren. RIP Gido. - Posted by: Roland, Lurdes, and Vanessa Camaclang (Parents and sister of Daniel Camaclang) on: Dec 12, 2015
