ALAN MCNAB MCKNIGHT September 2, 1927 - December 17, 2015 Alan was born in Killarney to Walter and Grace McKnight. He had his schooling there, followed by teacher training at Manitoba Normal School. After teaching for a few years in various Manitoba schools, he taught at the Canadian Forces base at Churchill, Manitoba, where he remained for six years before going to the University of British Columbia for further education. In 1962, he married a fellow teacher, Marguerite Stocks and returned to Fort Churchill for two more years before leaving to teach at CFB Shilo. After spending two years teaching there, he took the position of principal of O'Kelly School. In 1973, he and Marguerite took up summer residence at the cottage on Pelican Lake. This year, Alan celebrated his 80th summer at the cabin'. Winters were spent in Tempe, Arizona, until this year. Travelling was a favourite activity. Marguerite and Alan enjoyed many trips by car, plane and ship. Many nieces and nephews made life enjoyable. Alan was predeceased by his only brother, Archie. Thank you to the Home Care staff and visitors who cared for Alan during the past few weeks. A celebration of his life will be held in the Spring of 2016.

  • Lorna and I have many great memories of our time spent with Al and Marguerite. Over the years, my father-in-law, Clarence Stocks, Al and I played countless games of cribbage. Al was an excellent player so it was a great feeling if we managed to beat him. We always celebrated the joys of success or the agony of defeat by having a rye and ginger, or perhaps a wee dram of scotch. He was also the master of new card games and one that I was especially unsuccessful at was “reverse” cribbage, where the goal is to score as few points as possible – I never mastered this game and not unexpectedly, Al was usually the winner. Al was always one to challenge me on my beliefs. I used to believe a single malt scotch is always better than a blend. However, in a blind taste test he proved a good blend is better than a bad single malt. In the same vein, one evening while we were visiting them in Tempe, I mentioned that “Jif” was my favourite peanut butter. The next morning at breakfast Al announced “okay, we’re going to have a blind taste testing of peanut butter!” He blindfolded me and then put out four different kinds of peanut butter – he’d gone out early that morning to buy the samples. I tasted them all and at the end, the one I selected (the one I thought was “Jif”) turned out not to be “Jif” at all. “Curses, foiled again!” Al had a great life and a great wife and both enjoyed living life to the fullest – travelling the world and sampling all the delights each place had to offer. This has been an example for both Lorna and me to follow. We’ll miss you Ol’ friend, and look forward to seeing you on the other side for another round of cards. - Posted by: David B Morreau (nephew-in-law) on: Dec 22, 2015
