ARTHUR TOSHIAKI SHIMIZU September 21, 1928 - December 19, 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and brother; but celebrate a life well-lived. He is survived by Lillian, his wife and partner of 55 years; sons Ken and George (his wife Lisa and their sons Benjamin, Matthew and Daniel). Dad was predeceased by his parents; sister Chieko; and daughter Dana Yuki in 1996 whom he loved dearly. Born in Mission City, BC in 1928, Dad led a full and active life with work and pleasure taking him to many destinations across Canada and abroad. Dad married Mom (Lillian) on May 27, 1961 in Winnipeg and started a family. He took great pride and pleasure in watching his children grow and find success in their chosen fields, and later to being Ojiichan' to grandsons Benjamin, Matthew and Daniel. In 1962, Dad and Mom started Art's Ironcraft in Lethbridge, AB which specialized in iron work of all types. Dad's career path then had included Bridge and Tank Western Division and Ontario Hydro, Construction Division as a shop foreman. After relocating to Winnipeg, he continued working in the skilled trades as a welder with Dominion Bridge, Shefrin Industries and then Canadian Pacific Railway (Weston Shops), where he retired after more than 25 years of service. Thanks Dad for your work ethic, example and the sacrifices you made, like holding down multiple jobs at once and working those long hours, to build a better life and future for the family. Dad was a kind, caring and dignified man who enjoyed life's simple pleasures, like cooking and gardening with Mom or the company of friends (Jackie and Kuno to name but two), neighbours, colleagues and family (like brother Tad and wife Shirley); had admirable values and convictions; and was proud of his Japanese-Canadian heritage. His inner strength and courage were even more evident as he dealt with his respiratory illness without complaint and never failed to show appreciation for the support of those around him. Many thanks to the staff at Seven Oaks General Hospital, St. Boniface General Hospital, the W.F.P.S., Respiratory Services and Home Care who assisted Dad this past year; and a special thanks to Dr. Fred Olynyk and his staff (Marie, Tammy and Ellen) who cared for Dad with compassion and kindness all these many years. Domo Arigato Dad. We will love and miss you forever. As per Art's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial celebration will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 27, 2015 at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street. Flowers are respectfully declined. Friends wishing to do so should consider a memorial contribution to the charity of your choice. • Hard to believe that ten years have gone by since Art's passing. I think of Art often, and see his smile, hear his laugh. Art had a calming effect, his humour subtle and warm. Art's devotion to family, his caring, kind ways were most appreciated. I wish I could tell him that today. - Posted by: Theresa Stephens (Family Friend) on: Mar 07, 2025

  • I met Art when he came to work at CP rail in 1964. We worked together repairing railway cars doing steel, welding and other repairs. Art was very talented and easy going.he could figure out ways to repair things and came up with several inventions to make our work easier. Art became an air tester in his last years at the railway. I thank him for sharing his skills with all his co-workers for all those years. It was a sad day when he retired and he sure was missed. may god bless you art. - Posted by: jim l'esperance (friend) on: Dec 29, 2015
