SHEILA MARY BECK HUGHES
Born: Jun 19, 1931
Date of Passing: Dec 21, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHEILA MARY BECK HUGHES Surrounded by the love of her family, Sheila passed away on Monday, December 21, 2015. Sheila (nee Walmsley) was born on June 19, 1931 in Wallasey, England across the Mersey from Liverpool. Growing up in wartime England, she would later relate memories of rationing, bombings and she and her sister, Doreen being separated for years from three brothers: John, Allan and Vin, who where sent to homes in the countryside. Sheila married Peter Beck on November 27, 1954. Sheila talked fondly of the bicycle trips and hikes they would go on and the sailboat they shared with friends. The first five of their children were born in Stafford, where Peter worked as an electrical engineer and a sixth after our family immigrated to Canada in 1967. After settling into their house on Carpathia Road they became active participants in Parish life at St. John Brebeuf Church forming strong friendships that endure to this day. Family life with our Mum was amazing. Her love was unconditional. When problems arose she turned on the kettle for tea, and at night advised, "say your prayers, it will look better in the morning". Mum was right. She seemed able to do anything she set her mind to; she made sewing, decorating and cooking appear simple. (A truly wonderful cook, Mum asked not to be remembered for it; to her with a family of eight it was just something "one had to get on with"). She actively volunteered at St. John Brebeuf School in our primary years and later on at St. Mary's Academy and St. Paul's High School. Our home was filled with friends and laughter. Our summers were spent at Wanasing Beach in a cottage that together, our parents built and decorated. Sheila lovingly cared for Peter through a long illness with Parkinson's Disease. We missed our Dad terribly but a few years after his death in 1992 she entered another phase of her life, marrying Ellis Hughes on September 6, 1996. Mum and Ellis spent twelve adventurous years together. Dividing their time between Winnipeg and Florida they traveled extensively, visiting grandchildren and exploring the world. We were so happy they had those years together and all missed Ellis after he passed away in 2008. The most defining trait of our wonderful Mother was her resilience. Despite the loss of loved ones and setbacks along the way, she always picked herself up and moved forward. A true life-long learner she exposed herself to new challenges. She took up tennis in her sixties, learned to play bridge in her seventies and lawn bowling in her eighties. She recently learned to use her new iPad, communicated often through email and Skype and remained a formidable Scrabble opponent throughout. Sheila took enormous interest in her six children and ten grandchildren and is lovingly remembered by them all: Ian (Maxine Goring, Molly and Hamish); Sarah (Michael Raleigh, Keegan, Emma and Conor); Andrew; Penny (Jim McLandress, Hannah and Finlay), Hilary (John Nash, Zachary, Haydon and Olivia); and Chris (Brian Peel). Prayers will be said on Thursday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, January 15 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Brebeuf Parish Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place, with Father Mark Tarrant as the Celebrant. Our Mum thought all children should have a summer holiday as we did, so please consider a donation to "The Sunshine Fund" to send children to camp on her behalf. Mbcamping.ca (204-784-1134). We were so saddened to hear of your Mom's passing. She was such a gracious and caring person, and it was a privilege to know her and spend time with her when she visited Sun City Center every winter. We visited Eleanor's sister in Winnipeg this summer and Sheila invited us for a delicious lunch. We caught up with news about mutual friends and enjoyed the warmth of her graciousness. Please accept our deepest sympathy. - Posted by: Eleanor Crossley and David Rees (Friends) on: Jan 20, 2016

I was very sad to see the notice and my thoughts are with all of you. I'd wished Howard I were able to be at the service to hear the stories and share some memories but it was not to be. As Anne noted above, we have very fond memories of the holidays spent with the Beck family and the other English transplants. I recall fondly Boxing Day gatherings at the Beck's where the food was always amazing and chaos with all the kids was just part of the fun. Though it's funny when I think back to those days where our families were, for the most part, the closest thing we had to extended family. Great memories of you Mum. God bless. Saddened to hear of your mum's passing. What a great lady she was! raising her six children and all that energy and life she had,and lots of talents. She will be sorely missed. I remember going on your hay rides in the winter and back to your place for food, all her kids and extra ones to boot! your mom always rose to the occasion! My condolences to you all, I wish I was there to attend and see you all again! Best to all of you, Lorraine Ma (Gillis) - Posted by: Lorraine Ma (Gillis) (Friend of Sarah) on: Jan 14, 2016

Penny and Family; What a wonderful life story your Mom had. And a beautiful tribute to her. I always admired your mom's straightforward manner and her wonderful fashion sense. She always looked so put together. My view of her was in the "Beck" pew at church and I will always think of your family and your strong faith every time I go to St. John Brebeuf. She was a very wonderful person and always spoke with great pride about all of her kids. Although she never was one to brag. I am thinking of all of you together today and tomorrow for her funeral. She will be so pleased to know you are all there for each other. You are in my prayers. Love Deirdre Egan - Posted by: Deirdre Egan (Family friend) on: Jan 14, 2016

We remember with great fondness and happiness our times growing up together in Winnipeg with Sheila, Peter and family. What a great positive influence Sheila was to us all and how we all enjoyed our times together at each others homes, camping and at your cottage. They were halcyon days, swimming, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, sailing and so many more enjoyable activities. And what about those ingenious children's plays you produced and which we sat through after dinner and a little wine. They were unforgettable times and Sheila was front and centre. I can still picture Pat and Sheila giggling together as they proudly watched the enjoyable mayhem going on around them. How lucky we all were to have known this special person. She brightened our lives. From Doug, Leesa and Annice - Posted by: Baldwin (Friends) on: Jan 07, 2016
