DAVID (BRUCE) DOWN August 5, 1940 - December 19, 2015 Peacefully, after a year-long struggle with cancer, Bruce passed away the morning of December 19, 2015 in the St. Boniface Palliative Care ward. He was predeceased by his parents, Sydney and Marjorie, as well as four of his siblings, Kathleen (Kae) Gillespie, Jack, Gordon and Ron Down. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Sheila and their daughter Lisa (Jeremy Spiegel); brother Russ (Jill) in Calgary and sister-in-law Pat; as well as numerous cousins and nieces and nephews in Canada and England. Bruce was born and raised in Norwood, where his first jobs were delivering newspapers in the Norwood area and working as a soda jerk at Norbridge Pharmacy. He went on to work for many years at MTS and from 1968 until he retired in 2003, he worked at Tru-Serve Canada, where he established long-lasting friendships. His favourite place to spend the summer was at the cottage at Victoria Beach. He could often be found golfing, riding his bike, or working on the cottage to make it just right. As a bit of a perfectionist, he could always find something to fix. He was a very creative guy, always busy in his basement workshop building things for the cottage, tables, curio cabinets or anything else that would come to mind. For a guy whose shop teacher told him he wouldn't amount to anything in the woodworking area, he sure made beautiful things, with no instructions to follow, just his ideas. He became a member of the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries in 1993, serving as Secretary-Treasurer for several years. In 2006, he became involved with Nostalgia Broadcasting Cooperative (CJNU 93.7 FM) as one of the original founding members, a member of the Board of Directors and an on-air announcer. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place, but there will be no formal service. A get-together to remember his life will be planned for a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. If desired, donations may be made to the Canadian Goodwill Industries Corporation, Winnipeg, or Nostalgia Broadcasting Cooperative Inc., or a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Our family had the pleasure to live across the street from the Down family for over 10 years. We grew very fond of Bruce and would enjoy chatting with him and Sheila on McNulty Crescent. We are sad to hear of his passing, though our hearts are full with beautiful memories of him. • My deepest sympathies to the Down family .... I had the pleasure of working for/with Bruce for many years at MacLeods. He was a great leader, always good for a laugh, and a true friend to many. As I was a young man just starting in the computer industry, he provided support, encouragement, and direction to me and my career. For that, I am forever thankful. Rest in peace good friend! - Posted by: Mike Poitras (Co-Worker) on: Dec 31, 2015

  • You will be sadly missed by many. I recall many times sitting in your office at TruServ trying to pick apart a problem. When you wanted to know how and why something worked - go see DBD. Many laughs along the way too. - Posted by: Laureen Johnson (McMahon) (Former co-worker) on: Dec 30, 2015

  • So sorry to hear of your loss. Our deepest sympathies go out to Bruce's family. In all the years that I've known Bruce while working at MacLeods, he was a very caring, kind, gentle, sincere & happy individual. I'll never forget the day that he informed me that we were related. So happens that his brother was married to my auntie's daughter. Ever since then he called me auntie. Will miss him & always will remember him. Rest in peace Bruce. - Posted by: Betty & Albert Lannoo (freinds) on: Dec 27, 2015
