Date of Passing: Dec 19, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySYLVIA SAMUEL September 27, 1923 - December 19, 2015 Sylvia Samuel passed away, peacefully in her sleep, on the morning of December 19, 2015 at the Park Manor Personal Care Home. Sylvia is survived by her husband Tony, Cara and Corey (grandchildren), Patti (daughter-in-law), Roger (son), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Sylvia was born in Trinidad on September 27, 1923 and was the oldest sister to seven other siblings. At an early age Sylvia showed her love and passion for music and teaching. After winning numerous awards in Trinidad, as well as coaching many now famous musicians, Sylvia went to England with Tony and Roger in tow to study for her teaching degree specializing in Drama and Music. Her passion for teaching and music became quickly apparent to the school staff and students. Many music awards, drama awards were won as well as numerous in-service sessions where she taught others her innovative methods. Over the years she touched countless children with her smile, magic, care and dedication. She always saw the potential in her students and encouraged them to fulfill their potential at school and in life. In September 1972 Sylvia, Tony and Roger moved to Canada. She wasted no time in bringing her enthusiasm to Central North and Wayoata School where she spent the remainder of her career. She also gained her B.A. and B.Ed. shortly after arriving in Canada. Her Wayoata choirs won numerous awards and her Christmas concerts were legendary and unique. All of her students loved these extravaganzas and always wondered what "Mrs. Samuel" would come up with next. After her retirement from Wayoata School, Sylvia settled in to a quiet retirement. Her former students would often drop by to chat or be taught piano, an activity Sylvia loved for many years after her retirement. Sylvia always loved travelling and travelled much of the world with Tony with their last trip being a marathon to Australia and New Zealand. In her later years Sylvia battled dementia, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer disease. Despite these ailments she never lost her wonderful sense of humour and continued making people smile and flashing that incredible smile of hers. Sylvia lived a wonderful life and touched so many people with her care, compassion and love. She will be missed. Many thanks go out to the staff of Park Manor Personal Care Home for their care and compassion during Sylvia's short stay there. Funeral services will be held at Wheeler Funeral Home, 1800 Day St. at 12:00 noon on January 2, 2016. I was a student at Wayoata School between 1976 and 1983. Mrs. Samuel was my music teacher. She always had the ability to bring out the very best in us kids. Very early on she recognized that I had some musical ability and suggested to my parents that I learn an instrument. To this day I still play piano and now my own children take music lessons. Much of what I have learned from Mrs. Samuel early on, I have now passed on to them. I often wondered what had happened to her over the years when I visit Winnipeg and see Wayoata School again. I'm happy she had a very peaceful retirement but am saddened to hear of her passing. I will always have wonderful memories of her, my deepest condolences to her family. Throughout my whole life of education, she is by far the most memorable one. Who all the students first thought was extremely strict, only to realize that she only had our best interests at heart.
