ERIC WILSON It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eric Wilson on January 1, 2016 at the Victoria General Hospital. He is survived by his wife Audrey; children Lynne, John, and Alan; and grandchildren Erin, Evan, and Matthew. Eric Wilson was born in County Durham, England, on May 28, 1933. He was educated at Leeds University, where he obtained an Honours degree in mining engineering. Eric worked as undermanager for the coal board in the UK, before being hired by Inco Ltd. and moving with his young family to Thompson, Manitoba in 1967. There he worked for 28 years in mine production as shift boss, divisional foreman, and superintendent in succession. He also filled the positions of chief mining engineer and safety superintendent. Before retiring to Winnipeg, he was appointed Regional Manager for Energy and Mines for the provincial government. Eric was a member of the Professional Engineers of Canada and was twice chairman of the Thompson branch of the Canadian Mining and Metallurgical Foundation (CMMF). He had a keen interest in sports, including soccer and cricket; he was a lifelong supporter of Newcastle United. He joined the Wildewood Club upon retirement, where he enjoyed tennis, golf, and badminton. Eric was an accomplished world traveller, visiting over 30 countries with his wife Audrey, but he always made time to return to the UK, his home, for a Newcastle game and "pub night with the lads". Eric was known for his razor-sharp sense of humour and "outrageous" personality. He valued honesty, respect, and laughter above all else; he adored his family and held his friends in high regard. He had a "seize the day" approach to life which carried him to all corners of the world and made him a joy to spend time with. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. He will be profoundly missed. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Good for you, Eric, playing badminton on your last day! I played badminton with Eric and Audrey for many, many years at the Wildewood Club. They were such loyal members and we had such good games and fun with them. A few years ago, Eric and Audrey decided to take a trip to New Zealand. Their cruise ship docked at Christchurch for a day, and as I was living there, I picked them up from the dock and we had a lovely day driving out to a resort town, Akaroa, on the coast. Lots of good memories of Eric. My condolences to Audrey. Ruth Dyker - posted from Wanaka, NZ on Jan 14,2016 - Posted by: Ruth Dyker (Friend) on: Jan 13, 2016

  • Words fail us at this sad time, particularly as we are out of town and unable to console you Audrey with our presence. We have known each other for almost 50 years now since we joined Inco in 1968, immigrating to Thompson from the UK. Our friendship has, over these many years, developed into one of family more than friends. Your loss of Eric is our loss too and we grieve with you for Eric's untimely passing. Please accept our sincerest condolences and deepest sympathy. - Posted by: Barry and Tricia Hadfield, Winnipeg, MB. (Dear friends of Eric and Audrey) on: Jan 07, 2016

  • I got to know Eric (he was 'Mr. Wilson' to me) by virtue of my close friendship with his daughter, Lynne, and I spent a fair bit of time over at the Wilson household on Riverside Drive in Thompson during the 1980's. In fact, after my own parents left Thompson in 1984, over the next 4 years or so, Eric and Audrey became my surrogate parents of sorts. Even after Lynne had moved away, I was still invited over for dinners (I remember lamb with mint sauce) and/or asked to house/dog sit (good old Gyppers!) when they were out of town. I remember laughing along with Eric to episodes of Cheers and anything related to Monty Python. I would always chuckle when he would regale us with stories of his youth and early married life (He would proudly proclaim never having changed a diaper, for example). He was a man of his times and will be missed. - Posted by: Mike McGinn () on: Jan 07, 2016

  • In the early 80’s, I was working in the Engineering Dept at T3 in Thompson, MB. I happened to walk by a meeting that Eric was having with the underground crews after a day shift. At issue was the wearing of safety glasses. It was always a contentious issue as they had to constantly be cleaned from fogging up…and of course, flyback from the drilling. Eric listened to the comments for a few minutes then pointedly asked several miners if they would go underground without their hardhats on? He of course got told no….he then asked why? At that point it clicked, glasses were safety gear and just as important as any other piece of safety gear. Needless to say, there was no arguing his point. I have often used that example in my line of work to great success. I always make mention of who the originator of that comment was. I still marvel at how easily he dealt with that issue…logically, calmly and directly to the point. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Shawn Crockett ((Cornwall, ON)) on: Jan 07, 2016

  • Eric was a great neighbour. Always a friendly smile and a wave. I will miss our friendly chats which accompanied our appetizer and drinks evenings! I will remember all the sport stories. I admired his enthusiasm as a fan and an active participator. - Posted by: Jim Gustafson (Neighbour) on: Jan 06, 2016
