VED PRAKASH BAHL It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father Ved Bahl on January 5, 2016. Left to mourn are his children, Reema (John), Amit, and Rajeev; daughter-in-law Nelia; grandchildren, Jai and Sofia; Ariel and Sydney; sisters, Sneh, Krishna; and brother Baldev. He is predeceased by his loving wife Kanta; sister Sudesh; brothers, Surinder, Verinder, and Krishan. Ved was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya until leaving to London, England to study Law at prestigious Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn. He returned to Kenya becoming the first lawyer to be appointed in Meru. On December 1960, he married Kanta. After the birth of their three children they decided to make a new life in Canada arriving first in Toronto and then settling in Winnipeg in the early 1970's. Dad was one of the first Indian lawyers to have settled here in Winnipeg, and served in the City of Winnipeg Law Department until his retirement in 1998. From the early years in Winnipeg, mom and dad made many lifetime friends and also became vibrant social members of a growing Indian community. Dad was strongly devoted to family and the great outdoors. As a young family, we cherished our summer picnics, swims and the tasty barbecues with so many close friends. What also became so memorable was having Dad plan our summer holidays a mix of camping or setting out on long road excursions throughout the continent. One of dad's lifetime passions was racquet sports, becoming a long standing member of the Winnipeg Canoe Club where he enjoyed many years playing tennis and competitive squash. When his knees slowed him down, he introduced the club and the game to his two sons. Spending weekends playing together with dad or under his watchful and proud gaze, became some of our richest memories while growing up. An avid fitness enthusiast, dad remained active, enjoying daily and lengthy walks. His particular enjoyment came along walks near our home in Charleswood and around Assiniboine Park. These became his fondest trails as it is where he and Kanta had spent many years walking side by side. Losing Kanta, was losing his biggest love. We all felt we lost a part of dad with mom's passing in December of 2000. Dad spent his remaining years carrying on with his passions for gardening, traveling, reading and keeping up with current affairs. Walking and listening to classical music on his eyed would become his ritual. Despite three knee replacements and coping through other health setbacks, dad continued to take particular pride in reminding family and friends on how long or far he made out along his daily journeys. It was this same strength and perhaps stubbornness that allowed him to give it all to his very end. Although facing various health challenges over the last several years, dad was always surrounded by love and support. Our family wants to acknowledge and express our thanks to all those who made our dad comfortable and welcome in his new homes over the past several years at Canoe Club; Rosewood; Misericordia - Cornish 2 and Misericordia Place -3dr Floor. "Daddy", our heart will ache as we remember your warmest smile, softest demeanor and kindest heart. We will forever miss you. A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Thompson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Bled, Winnipeg, MB. Ved Bahl, ever since our days together at the Government Indian High School, Nairobi, was well regarded by whoever came in touch with him -- teachers as well as students. He carried his outstanding character- istics as a good student, good friend, god relatives into his professional life. There are few that are so universally loved; Ved Bahl was one such person -- a great husband and devoted father. - Posted by: Dr Visho Sharma (School friends) on: Jan 10, 2016

Introduced to us through Ved's nephew and our niece , who now reside in Australia, our friendship with Kanta and Ved grew into a relationship that of family. We saw Reema, Amit and Raji grow and show care for our boys and respect for us that reflected family values developed from their caring upbringing.Ved's stalwart battles against physical setbacks continued to be relayed to us since our move away from Winnipeg ;It was in keeping with the man. Also in keeping was a man who missed his beloved spouse so much. Ved , we salute you. - Posted by: Bala and Amrit Varma (Family friends) on: Jan 09, 2016

A tribute to my dearest Ved Uncle Having talked to Uncle a few times and knowing that he was growing weaker I had a great desire to see him for Ved Uncle had a special place in my heart. But then God too saw that he was getting tired, A cure was not to be. So He put His arms around him and whispered, "Come with Me." With tearful eyes, we all heard or watched him suffer, And saw him fade away. Although we loved him dearly, We could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes "The Best". Always in our hearts - always love by us all. We love you Ved Uncle - Posted by: Sunnil & Sheri Kapur (Uncle was my Mum's beloved brother ) on: Jan 09, 2016

Ved and Kanta Bahl were great friends. While in Charlewood, he used to walk by our house to Assiniboin park and stop for a small chat. Kanta was very sociable and often invited us for a cup of tea at their home. Both Kanta and Ved were respectfull members of Hindu community. It was sad to hear Ved's passing away. Our condolences to the family. We will miss him. - Posted by: Dr Jagdish and Mrs Brij Khatter (Friends) on: Jan 09, 2016
