ANITA MARIE ABBOTT July 16, 1938 - January 2, 2016 Anita passed away peacefully at home from natural causes. While small in stature, Anita overcame every obstacle life presented with courage, pride and a fierce determination to succeed. She excelled in all sporting activities from baseball and hockey to golf and bowling. Anita, or Neets', as she was affectionately known, became a legend at the Riverview Community Centre, known for both her goal tending ability but also her tenacious checking as a defensive hockey player. Her athletic prowess culminated in an award from United College - the predecessor to the University of Winnipeg - when she was named Athlete of the Year. Raised in Winnipeg and predeceased by her loving parents, Corona and Tom Abbott, Anita was a lifetime adherent of Christian Science which provided her with all the faith and support she required. Anita's many acts of love and kindness will be remembered and cherished by her dear friend Martha Vargas and her brothers, Harry (Carol) in Daytona, Florida, Reg (Lorene) and Alison (Judy), both of Victoria, BC, along with their combined offspring of 30 or more, including her 11 nieces and nephews. After moving from the West End of Winnipeg at age five, Anita lived her life in the South Osborne District, attending Riverview, Lord Roberts and Gordon Bell Schools. Following three years at United College, she went on to graduate from Teachers' College, and began 20 years in the Transcona-Springfield School Division #12, teaching elementary students at Westview, Wayoata and Regent Park Schools. Along the way, over those 20 years she earned her B.A. at the University of Winnipeg in 1968 and her B. Ed. at the University of Manitoba in 1974. Anita was a real hero at the Winnipeg Humane Society, having adopted many four-legged critters' - cats and dogs - over both her working and retirement years. Adopting pets wasn't enough, she also volunteered many joyful hours of her time. A Celebration of Life will be arranged for the Summer of 2016 in the Winnipeg area. Donations in Anita's honour may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3. www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca

As a former neighbour, I have fond memories of meeting Anita on the lane and having chats. A kind, loving, faithful, curious person, who shared joy with the world. My condolences to Martha and family. - Posted by: Robert Duncan (Neighbour ) on: Jan 17, 2016

I met Anita, through church, when I first arrived in Winnipeg in 1989. She has been a close friend and trusted adviser, who I went to many lunches and dinners with, and enjoyed watching movies at her house or mine. Anita was a model to look at when wondering what type of person you wished you could be more like. Extremely intelligent and someone who was absolutely required at any event where you needed that catalyst to assure a successful event full of fun, excitement, and adventure. - Posted by: Glenn Laycock (Personal Friend .. since 1989) on: Jan 11, 2016

Ms. Abbott was a teacher of mine in Regent Park School about 30 years ago. I've been told that you never forget the teachers that you learned the most from and that is true. Ms. Abbott not only taught me math, I also learned a lot about respect and how to be a better person. She was definitely a great teacher and a wonderful person. Thank you Ms. Abbott for everything you did. It was a pleasure being one of your students. - Posted by: Maria (Ex student) on: Jan 10, 2016

Neets was a special person who lived her life with a combination of grace and fierce determination. I haven't seen her for many years but we played baseball and bowled together as kids and I still remember her beautiful smile and lovely voice. She only saw the good in people, was curious about everything and threw a mean baseball. Later, I saw her several times with her brother Al and sister-in-law Gwen. She will be truly missed. My heart goes out to the Abbott family and to Neets dear friend, Martha Vargas. May memories comfort all of you in your time of sorrow.
