JEAN WALKER (LEPHA JEAN ANNE) 1937 - 2015 On December 16, 2015, Jean Walker passed away peacefully, but unexpectedly, from an undetected cancer. Jean is survived by her loving sister Lucille (Walker) Schmidt and her nephews, Tyler (Katherine) Schmidt and their sons, Oliver and Samuel, and Trevor (Kim) Schmidt and their daughters, Sydney and Lauren. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Lepha (Jickling) Walker, as well as her brother-in-law Sieghard (Sig) Schmidt. Jean attended United College (University of Winnipeg) and the University of Manitoba. She was a loved and respected teacher at Westwood Collegiate from 1961 to 1993. Jean taught English - her first love - her second love was her cheerleaders. Every year one cheerleading team, selected by the Manitoba Association of Cheerleading for showing great sportsmanship and effort, is awarded the Jean Walker Incentive Award. Jean was a true and loyal friend to many - she gave love and so she received it. A Service of Remembrance for Jean will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Agape Table, P.O. Box 2611, Winnipeg, MB R3G 3R3 or to a charity of choice.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • When ever I think of Westwood Collegiate the first name that comes to mind is Miss Walker. English Lit and I didn't always get along but Miss Walker always took time for me to help me through. I am very saddened to hear of her passing. All of her students were blessed for having known her. May God welcome her home with open arms. - Posted by: Rev. Doug Penn (Student 63-66) on: Jan 15, 2016

  • I remember the good times I had in Miss Walker's class. She was a great teacher and someone you could talk to if need be. I send my heartfelt condolences to her family. - Posted by: Bev Montgomery (Chorney) (Former student) on: Jan 13, 2016

  • I was a basketball player from 76-78 at Westwood Collegiate as well as one of her English students. Miss Walker was the cheerleader coach but was also like a mother hen to the basketball players as well. We could always count on her being at our games and often practices to give us support. In varsity we always looked forward to her yearly dinner for the players at her apartment. It's funny to look back on now, we dressed in our finest and used our best manners for this dinner as we would not want to disappoint her. On a personal level I always appreciated her support of me. She believed in me and encouraged me when others didn't and was the only one not surprised when I was accepted into Dentistry. I had the pleasure of being her neighbor at the Westwood Townhouses for a few years. When I got married she insisted that she come to a wedding shower a neighbor was having. Later when I moved elsewhere in Westwood, I would bump into her as she walked around the neighborhood. She still took an interest and always asked about my family. Miss Walker you made a difference to many lives by taking such a keen interest in your students and will be missed by your extended "family". - Posted by: Brian Piercy (Student) on: Jan 11, 2016

  • Jean was a long time family friend and teacher to me and my 2 siblings at Westwood. She would often join us for dinner, particularly during Easter, Christmas or Thanksgiving. I last saw her at my mom's funeral on November 9, 2015. She looked and sounded well and I even commented on how great she looked. We were all so shocked to hear of her passing only a few weeks later. She was a wonderful teacher and a kind and caring person. Growing up she was my model of propriety. She was a wonderful conversationalist and always made everyone feel that whatever they had to say was important. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Our deepest condolences to Lucille, Trevor, Tyler and their families. - Posted by: Janet Jardine (friend and student) on: Jan 11, 2016

  • I was fortunate to have Miss Walker as an English teacher in high school. Over the years, I have fondly recalled her lament, 'O yee of little vocabulary!' Only yesterday, I walked by a haberdashery and thought of her, as she was the person who taught me this word. How saddened I was when I got home to hear of her passing. Most sincere condolences to her family. She was very special and left a tremendous impression! - Posted by: Jennifer (Penner) Protudjer (Student) on: Jan 11, 2016

  • Ms. Walker was my former English teacher and Cheerleading coach at Westwood Collegiate. She encouraged and supported us to be our best, and would accept nothing less. She was dedicated to her students, and inspired us to achieve. I will never forget how she stood and clapped along to the music when we did our cheerleading routines, and watched with a critical eye to find areas that could be improved. She succeeded in helping us win the cheerleading competitions both years that I was lucky enough to cheer under her guidance (1985 and 86). May Peace be with all of her family and friends at this time. - Posted by: Krista Summers (nee Schmidt) (Former student) on: Jan 10, 2016

  • Just a student from 1961 that thought the world of her. Thanks - Posted by: dick tunny (student) on: Jan 10, 2016

  • I have known Jean from the nineteen fifties. Six of us formed a group and met many times for years. Our special times were every December when we celebrated with food, drinks and lots of laughter. Unfortunately all but one have either died or left Winnipeg. Jean was a great lady with many friends - always ready to listen and hear about one's life or family. She will be sadly missed. - Posted by: Jean Barratt (long time friend) on: Jan 09, 2016
