Date of Passing: Jan 12, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVICTOR DESIATNYK September 5, 1935 - January 12, 2016 It is with great sadness, the family announces the passing of our Patriarch, Victor Desiatnyk, aged 80. Born on the family homestead in Sandy Lake, Manitoba, Vic moved to the City of Winnipeg to meet and marry his life-long partner Donna Mae Kennedy in the summer of 1958. In 1963, the young couple purchased a home and settled into Transcona and within a few years, had created a family with the addition of two little girls, Lisa and Darcy. Vic was very active in the community, coaching baseball, softball and hockey to young children as well, hosting the occasional balloon fight with nearby neighbours. His yard, with the big apple tree and fresh garden vegetables, was a focal point for get-togethers and bbq's, his sidewalk a safe place to learn how to ride a bike and his home, the place to be for weekly Sunday brunches. For just over 40 years, Vic serviced the community as the Master Barber at Health Sciences Centre until his retirement in 2000. With an open ear, an open door and an opinion, Vic's Barber Shop remained a comforting place for all to come and discuss the topics of the day. He would often joke that if he liked you, you were in good hands and over the years, those hands remained steady, regardless if it was your first cut or was to be your last. In 2004, the love of his life Donna passed following a lengthy and courageous battle. It was during that time, that we saw Vic's greatest gifts... devotion, love, dedication and compassion as they were on full display as he cared for his ailing wife. What isn't spoken, need not be - when action speaks volumes. Left to mourn his passing are daughters, Lisa (Ray) Gladu and Darcy (Todd) Shewchuk; grandchildren, Brittany (Dave) Karbonik, Crystal (DeVan) Hixt, Nicole, Matthew and Melissa Shewchuk; great-grandchildren, Alexis Hixt and Peter Karbonik as well as baby Hixt, expected later this summer. Also grieving are his sister Pauline Beaton and brother Walter (Kathy) of British Columbia; brothers-in-law, David (Alice) and Dennis (Emily) Kennedy of Winnipeg, Dennis (Catherine) McMullin of Titusville, Florida; as well, his life-long friends Pamela Smeaton, Orland and Terri Smith and their families. We're happy to know that Dad is being welcomed into the loving arms of his wife; sisters-in-law Doreen, Dale; brother-in-law Bob and his best friend Chuck. At Vic's request, there will not be a formal service however we would like to invite friends, neighbors and family to a come and go in Vic's honour at the Royal Canadian Legion #7 (Transcona) at 117 Regent Avenue East in Winnipeg on Sunday, January 17, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire, donations may be made in his memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, The Kidney Foundation, The Arthritis Society or The Health Sciences Centre Foundation.
