ANDREW (ANDY) CRAWFORD TOUGH "Eternal Vigilance" - 155 Squadron November 5, 1921 - January 13, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Andy was predeceased by his wife Lilian (Betty), and is survived by his son Allan (Chris), grandsons: Colin (Natalie) and Craig (Sharwyn) and his great-grandchildren, Taylor, Brandon and Connor; his son Brian (Carla) and grandchildren: Shannon (Adam) and Alistair (Brittney); and his daughter Sheila (Jim) and grandsons: Matthew and Ashton. Andy was predeceased by his parents, John and Jane (née Innes), his sister Jean (Harry) and his brother Jock (Jean), and is survived by his nephew Ian and his nieces, Anne and Alison, and their children and grandchildren. Andy was born in Dufftown, Scotland and grew up in nearby Fraserburgh, where he graduated from the Fraserburgh Academy in 1940. He was accepted to the R.A.F. in 1940, earned his pilot's wings flying Harvard Trainers in Moose Jaw after training in Tiger Moths in Alabama, Georgia and Neepawa, Manitoba. He flew his first Spitfire in the UK before deployment to India, where he joined the 155 Squadron and flew the brand new Spitfire Mark F VIII, serving with the Allied Forces in Burma for 15 months. Upon returning home, Andy earned his law degree at Aberdeen Law School in 1949 and practiced as a solicitor until he immigrated with his family to Canada in 1956. He worked as a trust officer with National Trust, until he boldly decided to return to the practice of law in 1961, joining the firm of Thorvaldson, Eggertson, Saunders and Mauro in Winnipeg and was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1963. He and his partners merged with Aikins MacAulay in 1969 to form the prestigious firm of Aikins, MacAulay and Thorvaldson. He continued to practice in the corporate law and wills and estates areas until his retirement in 1998. Andy enjoyed a long association with the St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg and was the 73rd President in 1974 to 1975. He was renowned to have given the Toast to the Haggis at many of the Annual St. Andrew's Dinners, and was very proud to have attended numerous Burns' Suppers held by the Robert Burns' Society in Edmonton. He was also a member of the Wartime Pilots and Observers Association in Winnipeg, where he was President in 1976 to 1977. Andy was heavily involved as an organizer and attendee at the very successful Commonwealth Air Crew Reunions held in Winnipeg and London, England in the 1970s and 1980s. He continued his passion for flying by earning his private pilot's license and flying his own Cessna 152 for many years in Winnipeg and surrounding areas. He always enjoyed meeting friends and playing a game of pool at the St. James Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Andy will be lovingly missed by all of his family and friends who knew him as a gentleman and a grand Scot. The family gratefully acknowledges the care provided by the staff at the Golden Door Geriatric Home in Winnipeg. Cremation has taken place and no memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers or other tributes, donations would be gratefully appreciated to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Sheila and Jim, my sincere sympathy to you all on the loss of your dad. He was a great guy with a wonderful sense of humour. We had many long chats on our daily visits at Golden Door. In Tex as for the winter but perhaps we can get together on our return. - Posted by: Sue Heim (Friend) on: Jan 24, 2016

  • On a business trip to South Dakota in August, 1974 (as hot as Burma), Andy maintained the only way to beat "the prickly heat" was to "tip another cold one!" As his buddy Alistair McDiarmid would say, "a grand drinking companion" and to me also, a great partner in law. - Posted by: Derek Booth (Business relationship) on: Jan 19, 2016

  • I met Andy when he asked to join the firm. His intelligence and sense of humour convinced me that he would be a valuable addition to our firm and a joy to work with. Both assessments proved correct. We had many lunches together, and good times around my swimming pool.He never failed to bring me a piece of Haggis after the St.Andrews Day dinner. He was a truly a gentleman and I am grateful to have known him. - Posted by: Arthur Mauro (We members of the same law firm but more importantly we were friends) on: Jan 16, 2016
