DENIS JOSEPH FRANCOIS COURTEAU August 8, 1958 - January 10, 2016 With sadness, we announce the passing of Denis on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at the Selkirk Hospital. He fought a brave five year battle with PMP (Pseudomyxoma Peritonei, also known as Appendix Cancer) with determination and tenacity. Denis leaves to mourn his wife Dawn, his son Kenneth (Andrea Gallagher); his siblings Paulette (Claude) Fillion, Louis, Jackie, and Dan (Diane); sisters-in-law Peggy Haslam, and Diane (Norm) Lambert; nephews and nieces Daniel Fillion (son Kendal), Dominique (Dan) Kozarchuk (daughters Mikayla, Kaitlyn, Alycia), Marc Courteau, Patrick (son Finnley), Lauren, and Lyndsay (Greg Litschke) Lambert. Denis' godparents Dianne Carlson, and Frank (Cathy) Courteau are also left to mourn, along with many other relatives and truly great friends who were like family to him. Denis joined the Winnipeg Police Service in 1982. He was very proud of his 20 years spent mainly in general patrol and his last few years as a school resource officer. Denis really enjoyed the interaction with staff and students alike. After retiring in 2006, Denis became an educational assistant at St. Emile School, where he was affectionately known as "Mr. C" by all. He always talked about the students and wondered where life had taken them, even after his retirement in 2013. Denis was able to enjoy his "his little slice of heaven" by taking up full time residency at our cottage/retirement home on Lake Winnipeg. He could sit and take in all the work he accomplished around the place. Illness did not stop Denis from anything. Traveling took him to Florida, Hawaii, Mexico, California, and in 2013, an explore USA road trip that covered 15,000 kms. and 18 states, camping in places never to be forgotten. The family have been left with great memories. Many thanks to Dr. W. Temple (Foothills Hospital, Calgary); Dr. P. Daeninck and staff (CancerCare Manitoba); Dr. R. Lindenschmidt and staff (Selkirk and District Hospital); especially nurses on Medical 2, Chemo Room nurses, and support staff - Melanie, Angelina, Lisa, and Susan; as well as home care staff - Debbie, Lisa, Cheryl, Ginette, Delaine, and Joy. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m., on January 23, 2016, at the St. Mary's Road United Church (613 St. Mary's Rd., Winnipeg). In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (15 entries)

  • What a huge loss to humanity is the passing of this gentle, intelligent enthusiastic soul whom I am proud to call friend. Gone too soon after a valiant fight; so glad you are at peace now, Denis. Dawn and Kenny and all the family, my deepest sorrow for your personal loss. We WILL see him again one day. Love... - Posted by: Lynda Dominy (Friend of Dawn and Denis since 1979) on: Apr 22, 2016

  • Dawn: I am saddened by your loss. My condolences to you and your family in this time of grief. - Posted by: Menno Zacharias (Co-worker) on: Jan 19, 2016

  • My deepest sympathy goes out to all the Courteau family. I first worked with Denis in the School Resource Unit. He was not only a co-worker, but a friend as well. I so enjoyed when we would have unit parties and Denis would always bring his Karaoke machine, unlike everyone else that sang, Denis had a beautiful voice. He was kind, generous, and always willing to help whatever the task would be. I will certainly miss him. - Posted by: Gaby Irving (co-worker and friend) on: Jan 19, 2016

  • I met Denis in 1979, on the cb radio. We ere both enthusiasts of the cb and spent countless hours talking on the cb together going for drives and trying to find where the other was parked. In 1980 we both worked at Birds Hill park as park patrol officers. That was the start of a 35 year friendship. Although after the park we went different directions, Denis to the police and I to the province, we remained friends. We formed a supper club together with our wives, Dawn Courteau, and Diane Groves, Richard Kramble and Iris, and Mike Robson and Gerry. We stayed friends through thick and thin seeing each other and our growing families for dinners at various homes, over the years.I never thought I would be writing this for my friend as I believed he would be doing it for me first. I will miss you bud. Your friend Gord. - Posted by: Gord and Diane Groves (Friends) on: Jan 19, 2016

  • Dawn, I am so saddened to hear of Denis' passing. My deepest sympathy goes out to you and your family. I have such fond memories of our years at Birds Hill Park working together. Those were fun years. Denis was always so great to talk to and I could always depend on him to come by the gate when needed! He will be missed. My thoughts are with you at this very sad time. - Posted by: Colleen Nick-Johnson (Friend) on: Jan 19, 2016

  • Our deepest sympathies to Dawn and Kenneth and Denis' brothers and sisters for their loss. Denis fought a courageous battle and left us all much too early. We can all take solace in the fact that he is no longer suffering. - Posted by: Frank Courteau (Denis's Uncle and Godfather) on: Jan 18, 2016

  • My wife Cathy taught with Denis at St. Emile. He was very well liked. - Posted by: Jim Caron (friend) on: Jan 17, 2016

  • I am saddened to hear about the passing of "Mr. C". I will remember him as our "go to" guy at St. Emile for tech issues and our "Kindergarten Cop" as I would joke with him. He was always willing to help. I enjoyed our conversations about lake life and travel. Denis always had a great story to tell! My deepest condolences to Dawn, Kenny and the entire family. - Posted by: Alyson Field (co-worker & friend) on: Jan 17, 2016

  • We had the opportunity to work with both Denis & Dawn within the Police service. We also visited with Denis at their lake home and at the Selkirk Hospital in the weeks prior to his passing. He fought a valiant fight with Dawn at his side. Our sincere condolences to Dawn and Ken. Another dedicated Police Officer has left us too soon. - Posted by: herb stephen & Dianne Bain (co-worker and friend) on: Jan 16, 2016

  • I met Denis on October 12, 1982 when we began attending WPS recruit class #102. He was #1371 and I am #1370. We were pretty close in recruit class, and while we never worked together after graduation, we always had time for each other because of that special bond forged in class. I'll always remember Denis' easy-going personality, smiling and laughing no matter what came his way. Dawn I wish I could be there on Saturday, and please accept my regrets. Rest in peace Denis, your friend Dave Danger. - Posted by: David Clayton (recruit classmate and coworker) on: Jan 16, 2016

  • Denis came to our shift in District 6 in 1983 or so and he and I worked together a fair bit in the next 5 years. We both shared the passion of living outside the city and he beat me to it by moving out Anola way. We shared a lot of laughs and good times together. Denis was the real deal, just a super genuine guy. Taken from us far too soon. Thanks for the memories Denis, rest easy my friend. My condolences to Dawn and the family. - Posted by: Glen Schattner (co-worker & friend) on: Jan 16, 2016

  • My sincerest and deepest condolences to DAWN and KENNETH on DENIS' passing so early in his life. DENIS and I first met in District 6 where we were patrol partners on the same uniform platoon. He could always be counted on as a true professional and also as a trustworthy partner who would do anything to assist a fellow member. There are many 'old day' work related stories that will remain as fond memories of a former partner gone way to early. Rest in peace DENIS. - Posted by: Garry LEACH (Co-worker & friend) on: Jan 16, 2016

  • We are so sad to learn of his passing. We offer our sincerest condolences to Dawn, Kenny and all the family. Denis was a great partner on the job, a terrific friend away from it. A friendly, dependable, caring guy who would do anything for you or asked of him. He wore his heart on his sleeve and was always smiling. I will treasure our working years together because of his friendship and solid work ethic, which always made each day that much better. Rest easy my friend, may we someday meet again. I'll bring you that Habs jersey and a Pepsi.... - Posted by: Carl & Terry Shier (co-worker & friend) on: Jan 16, 2016

  • We knew Denis for many years and we shared some great times in the "good old days." He was a fun-loving guy with a big heart and he will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Our sincere condolences go to Dawn, Kenny, and the rest of his family. - Posted by: Doug and Debbie Smiley (friends) on: Jan 16, 2016

  • In 1990 I had the privilege of working with Denis in District 6, and we had some good times together, lots of laughs included, and as a plus we even managed to create some great memories along the way. Not enough space to list them all here and no doubt best to keep them to ourselves, right Denis. I am sure to this day you are still wondering how I got over that fence so fast. Sure doesn’t seem like twenty-five years ago and thanks to those good memories I have thought of Denis quite often. It saddens me that we never got together over the years to reminisce. Happy trails Denis and rest in peace. Your co-worker, friend, and mentor (inside joke on that last one, right Denis). Until we meet again my friend. 589. - Posted by: Ron Campbell (co-worker and friend) on: Jan 16, 2016
