HENRY ALBERT (BERT) MOON April 2, 1924 - January 14, 2016 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Henry Albert "Bert" Moon on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at the Grace Hospital, at the age of 91 years. Remaining to cherish Bert's memory are his son, Geoff (Gwen); daughters, Pat (Wayne) and Kerry (Kirk); grandchildren, Scott, Todd (Twyla), Aynsley (Scott), Jaime (Greg), Calvin (Toni), Sarah (Kevin) and Courtney; great-grandchildren, Avery, Tyson, Spencer, Easton, Keegan, Sloan, Rocco and Levyn. He was predeceased by his wife Barb in 2010, after 60 years of marriage; brothers, Ewart and Doug; sisters, Olive, Beryl and Betty; as well as great-grandson Vaughn. On April 2, 1924, Bert was born in Hornsea, County of York, England and came to Canada with his parents as a young boy in 1927, settling on the farm in Petersfield, Manitoba. Along with his eight siblings, the family eventually moved to Winnipeg. In 1943 Bert enlisted in the Navy and served in the Merchant Marine, travelling to Victoria, British Columbia and then on to Australia. Returning to Winnipeg, he began his career with the Winnipeg Free Press, working in the composing room until his retirement after 44 years with the paper. Bert and Barb enjoyed many wonderful summers at the cottage in Victoria Beach, especially his early Sunday morning rounds of golf with his good friends. He was also a member at Assiniboine Golf Club and played a good game well into his 80s, including a hole-in-one at 78 years of age at John Blumberg golf course. As the kids grew, Bert became involved in various activities and was always there to help and support them. Dad was a Cub Scout leader for many years at Silver Heights United Church, as well as the Silver Heights Community Club coaching hockey. He generously gave his time to Sturgeon Creek United Church. Dad and Mom enjoyed many and varied activities including bowling, square dancing, cross-country skiing and traveling abroad. Bert also volunteered at the Grace Hospital Pharmacy for 14 years after retiring from the Winnipeg Free Press, and received an award for his outstanding contribution to the volunteer program in the hospital. Over the last few years, Bert has enjoyed his time at the Kiwanis Courts, making new friends, trying new activities and being well looked after. He will be dearly missed and will always have a special place in our hearts. In compliance with Bert's wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice.
