STEVE (STEFAN) WAWRYK July 20, 1921 - January 11, 2016 With great sadness, the family of Steve Wawryk announce his peaceful passing on January 11, 2016 at Langley's Rosewood Manor. To cherish his memory is his sister Jo Swirski and sister-in-law Thelma Wawryk. Steve adored his many nieces and nephews, and he will be greatly missed by all. He was born on July 20, 1921 in Gimli and lived in Netley, Manitoba until honourably serving his King and country in the Second World War. Steve served with the Royal Canadian Artillery, 3rd Field Regiment, 19th Battery, 1st Division in the battle of Ortona, Italy. He was wounded in battle and invalided to England, where he was reunited with his two serving brothers, Nick and Paul, in December 1943. After the war, Steve returned to Manitoba and started a trucking company in Netley and in 1959 made the move along with brother Walter to British Columbia. They worked together at a mill on Salt Spring Island until a work shortage precipitated a move for Walter to Vancouver. Steve became enraptured with the beauty and peacefulness and made Salt Spring his home for the next 51 years, where he ran an excavation and trucking company for a number of those years. He was an active member of the Salt Spring community and enjoyed time spent at the Salt Spring Island Legion. Favourite activities included, playing the violin, handcrafting items and cribbage tournaments, where his skill was evident by the trophies he received. On numerous occasions he made the trek back to Manitoba to visit with friends and family. Steve moved to Rosewood Manor in Langley in 2010, where he enjoyed time spent with his sister Jo and relished the goodies she delivered every week. Steve was predeceased by sister Marian and brothers, John, Nick, Peter, Paul, Walter and Wasyl. Cremation has taken place with interment and memorials to take place at a later date.
