JEANNETTE CHARBONNEAU
Date of Passing: Jan 19, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJEANNETTE CHARBONNEAU It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, of our family's matriarch, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Jeannette will be dearly missed by her devoted spouse of 55 years, Marcel; her son Dan (Lorie); daughter Melanie (Ron); grandchildren, Kate, Jessica, Luke, Ben and step-grandchildren Zach, Josh and Andrew; brother Ronald (Lynne); two sisters, Eva (Bob) and Pat (Jim); and in-laws, Armande (Lionel) and Orval (Donna). Also very saddened by her passing are all her nieces; nephews; and godchildren - Yvette, Michelle, Alain, Gilles, James, Lise, Christine, Mandy, Darcy, Matthew, Mark, Lisa, Tim, Jackie and Catherine. She was predeceased by her parents and her older sister Dolores. Jeannette was born the middle child of five children of Zephirin and Helene (nee Rivard) Lachance, on a farm near Elie, Manitoba. She was one very special person. She thrived on life and on her family and friends. Jeannette's grandchildren were always at the forefront of her life. She had a strong and passionate connection to each one of them and relished in the moments shared together. Many happy memories will remain with us forever especially the times spent at the family cottage at Victoria Beach and our numerous ski holidays. She was by all accounts "Grand maman extraordinaire". Jeannette was adventurous and interested to learn more about others' cultures, histories, arts and geographies. Life's passions led her and Marcel with family and friends around the world - Portugal, Ecuador, China, Egypt, Kenya, Peru, France and Spain. If you were with her, you definitely had to keep up! She was always friendly and eager to try something new. She was open to conversation. Friendships came easily to Jeannette. Along with extensive travelling, she was active in body and in mind. She was an avid walker, a cyclist, a golfer, a kayaker and a skier. Jeannette worked faithfully on her crosswords. Newspaper clippings adorned her kitchen cupboards or would appear at one's door. She loved reading and her book clubs were precious to her. Education meant everything to Jeannette. She spent a career as a French teacher, then as a teacher-librarian mainly with the Winnipeg School Division. Her glory years were at école River Heights School where a group of very talented teachers worked (and played) side by side for a number of years. Jeannette retired supposedly in 2003, however, she couldn't quite leave the classroom, offering to support special projects and to substitute teach in the FI programs in St. James. JC was generous with her time, energy and love. She was fun to be around. Her kindness extended not only to you but also to your spouse, children and grandchildren. With Jeannette on your side, you were in good hands and a delicious meal was likely in the works. She will be fondly remembered for her friendliness, generosity and caring. She helped and touched many people in her 75 years. Jeannette's life's values have set expectations high for us. She would want us to remember to always look after one another, to keep moving and to never stop learning. A Celebration of Jeannette's Life will be held on Monday, January 25, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, located in Charleswood, 4588 Roblin Boulevard, Winnipeg. Honorary pallbearers will be Luke, Ben and Mark Charbonneau, Tim Hope, James Grattan, Darcy Lachance and Alain Bernardin. The family would like to send their gratitude to the staff at HSC Neurology, CancerCare McDermot Unit, the St. James Palliative staff, the staff at Riverview 3E and the loving caregivers at the Grace Hospice. Many of you have supported us along her journey and we are so grateful for your love. Bitter news. Mme Charbonneau was indeed a great French teacher and fondly remembered by us alumni of River Heights Jr. High; the comments made in the announcement above resonated with me this morning. I suppose we are now of the age where our mentors and teachers will be leaving us. Sad, for sure. The torch is being passed to us to lead the current generation to adulthood. Mme Charbonneau raised the bar pretty high to that end. She will be missed. - Posted by: David Howard (French Immersion Student - River Heights 1982-1984) on: Jan 25, 2016

I enjoyed working with Jeanette at Ecole River Heights for many years. We were often if not always on the same page when it came to teaching the french immersion programs.(Jeanette was instrumental in authoring and implementing these courses). One particular year, 1990, my spouse was gravely ill and I was directed to leave the school and not to return until she was fully recovered. Jeanette took it upon herself with the help of a few others to make sure that my substitute had all of the required material so that the program was well delivered. Upon my return, I could see all of the extra work that she had put in to accomplish this task. Jeanette was a wonderful co-worker, a very dear friend, and should I say...a kindred spirit. Merci encore Jeanette.Un service bien rendu. Je t'aime. Jean-Paul Bergeron - Posted by: j.p. bergeron (Colleague) on: Jan 25, 2016

Mme Charbonneau was my French teacher at River Heights from 1983-1985. She took extra time out when she saw I was struggling and with her guidance I was able not only to finally get decent grades in French and the other classes that were taught in French, but I was able to master the language. Eventually I moved to Montreal and, thanks to the base she had given me, I was able to perfect my French to such an extent that it wasn't immediately obvious to Francophones that it wasn't my first language. I spent 15 lovely years there living and working in mostly French-speaking environments, something I never would have been able to due were it not for Mme Charbonneau. Merci beaucoups, Mme Charnonneau. C'est grâce à vous que j'ai pu changé ma vie. - Posted by: Nathaniel Stone (Former student) on: Jan 25, 2016

Jeannette was an amazing mentor to me at River Heights, both when I was one her yearbook committee in Grade 9, and then later when I started teaching there. When I brought students into the library, she always sent me for a coffee because she loved teaching them herself (or so she said...I think that was true, but that she also wanted to give a first year teacher a break). I will always fondly remember correcting Social Studies exams with her, while sitting at a picnic table at Fun Mountain. She was such a wonderful woman and will be greatly missed. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Katherine Abra (Student and Colleague) on: Jan 24, 2016

Madame Charbonneau was my favourite teacher in French Immersion at River Heights. Everybody loved her and her class. I remember in teaching us about the planets, she would say particular student's heads reminded her of a certain planet. (I was Neptune.) Years later when I would see her at Victoria Beach, she would keep me on my toes because I always had to speak French with her, even in line at the bakery. Au revoir, Madame, au revoir. - Posted by: Geoff Kirbyson (Student) on: Jan 24, 2016

Jeanette was a true friend. Without her help, settling in this country would have been unspeakably difficult for us. We will keep her in our hearts forever. Dragica, Milos and Djordje - Posted by: Milidrag family (Friends) on: Jan 24, 2016

It was a pleasure to work with Jeanette for many years. I'm sorry not to be there to give her a last tribute. Ray and I send our deepest condolences. - Posted by: Michelle McLeod (friend) on: Jan 24, 2016

I first met Mme Charbonneau as the mom of Dan. Later, when we moved, she was my French teacher. She was always firm, but kind. As a student, I experienced a lot of the 'firm'.....but always deservedly so. My condolences to M Charbonneau, Dan, Melanie, and their families. - Posted by: Jim Beatty (Former Student) on: Jan 23, 2016

What a lovely tribute for such a wonderful and courageous woman. She taught me everything I didn't want to know about yearbooks and libraries. She made going into work a pleasure with many fun filled times. Jeannette will be sadly missed. Terry and Ron - Posted by: Terry Hayden (Friend) on: Jan 23, 2016
