MAIMIE SHUMSKY With great sadness, we announce that Maimie Shumsky, aged 85 years, passed away on January 6, 2016. Funeral services were held on January 8, 2016 at Congregation Etz Chayim and she was laid to rest at Bnay Abraham Cemetery, with Rabbi L. Lander presiding. Maimie is survived by her sons, Yale, Michael (Judy) and Russell (Tracy); grandchildren, Leanne (Murray), Terra (Warren), Cindy, Sandy (Murray), Daniel (Latoya), Sarah (Andrew), Stefanie (Lance), Kaylene, Michael and Nathanael; as well as 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Molly and Donnie Rosenblat; her brother Sydney and her sister Arlene. Maimie lived her life with great spirit, energy and courage. She valued education and family above all. Maimie was born on November 9, 1930 in Winnipeg. She graduated from St. John's Technical High School in 1947. In 1949, she married Sydney Shumsky, of Winnipeg, and they lived in Winnipeg, Montreal and Vancouver, before moving to San Mateo, California in 1955. After her divorce, Maimie returned to Winnipeg to pursue post-secondary education at the University of Manitoba, all the while raising her three boys. Through hard work and perseverance, she graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Home Economics degree and a Certificate in Education. Maimie established a Home Economics teaching career and taught in various communities in British Columbia, including Gibsons, Revelstoke, Kelowna, Burnaby, Trail and Creston. In 1985, Maimie returned to Winnipeg to retire and care for her mother, Molly. She resided in East Kildonan for many years until moving into the River Ridge Retirement Residence in 2013. During her years in Winnipeg, Maimie proudly watched her grandchildren grow up. She was a loving part of her Winnipeg family's life. She also made regular visits to her two sons in Vancouver. Sewing and clothing design were Maimie's passions. She also took many evening classes to further her education. Maimie enjoyed travel and went on 19 cruises over the years. Her friends at the Gwen Sector Creative Living Centre and River Ridge appreciated her outgoing and direct personality and her sense of humour. We wish to thank the wonderful staff at River Ridge for their care and friendship, Rabbi Lander and the staff at Congregation Etz Chayim for their guidance and kindness, and the excellent caregivers at Riverview Health Centre for helping Maimie through her final days. She will be missed and lovingly remembered by us all. One word, Frees us from all the weight and pain of life. That word is love. Sophocles

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I've been thinking so much about Mrs. Shumsky lately. She was my home economics teacher in Revelstoke in 1972/73 and still has a lasting impact on my life. Everything Mrs. Shumsky did seemed filled with grace, even if it was just teaching us the right way to bake a biscuit. She was the first person who talked to me like I was an adult, instead of a 12/13 year old. I remember her giving me a ride home one day and talking to me, and perhaps understanding that I was not feeling "seen" at home. I felt "seen" by Mrs. Shumsky for the first time, and I will always be thankful for her gifts. I wanted her family to know how much Mrs. Shumsky's heart and actions still impact her students, and those lucky enough to be graced by her presence. Rest in peace and love dear Mrs. Shumsky. - Posted by: Maia Caron (Student) on: Aug 09, 2023
