JOHN L. CHALE March 21, 1923 - February 7, 2016 On Sunday, February 7, 2016 our beloved husband, dad, and poppa passed away with his loving wife of over 70 years at his side. As in life, he felt the love of his family surrounding him until the end. John was born in Saint Boniface, Manitoba, to Jean B. Chale and Leontine (Gobeil). He graduated from Provencher School and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on May 5, 1941. Shortly after receiving his wings he was seriously injured in a flight accident, and spent two years in hospital. While recovering in the Deer Lodge Hospital John met the love of his life, Marjorie Emma Holden. They were married in 1944 and raised six children together. They lived in St. Boniface and enjoyed cottage life in Sioux Narrows, Ontario. John was the Treasurer for the City of St. Boniface until amalgamation in 1972 when he became the Deputy Treasurer for the City of Winnipeg until his retirement in 1983. John's retirement years were spent visiting family and enjoying life between Winnipeg, Sioux Narrows and Tucson, Arizona. He enjoyed golf, curling, fishing and almost any card game from solitaire to bridge. He continued to play bridge and managed all of his affairs until his passing. He was a man of deep faith and a devoted member, volunteer and supporter of Saint Bernadette's Catholic Church. He was also a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus. John was a gentle, wise and principled man, kind, generous and fair to the core. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Marjorie; his children, Carol Anne and Bob Carmichael, John and Leslie, Penny and Brian Thompson, Pat and Don Bays, Jim and Bonnie, Tim and Stephanie. He also leaves to mourn his 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; his sisters, Louise Proulx, Grace Richard and Eveline Chales; and one brother, Leon Chale. He was predeceased by his parents and older brother, Roland Chale. A celebration of his remarkable life will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing to do so may make a donation in remembrance of John to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St. Suite 200, Winnipeg, MB. R3L0K6, or a charity of choice. The family wish to thank grandchildren, Shannon and Doug MacInnes, Dianne and JH Carmichael, and the caregivers at Vista Park Lodge for their compassionate support during Dad's last days. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • This Sunday is the 5th Sunday of Lent aka Lazarus Sunday. Each year I thing of John in a special way on this Sunday as he cheated death twice in his long life. Now he is experiencing God's eternal life! - Posted by: Fr. Fred Olds (parish priest) on: Mar 12, 2016

  • Poppa was an enormous influence in the father, husband and man I have become. His calm and reflective demeanor contributed greatly to my own mannerisms as I grew up. I remember very fond moments with him, playing endless games of crazy rights , referring JH and I picking on one another ,and always being someone easy to talk to and ask for advice. I reflect back to how patient he was with all those children always running around. As I grew older and many miles between us, I always felt close to Poppa every time we talked, like he was always close by. I still watch the "national" every night, something he and I did together when I was young. Now that I am a father he is on my mind often, when I think about my own family unit and how I want my children to see me. Poppa will always be a benchmark for my guidance in life , and will hope someday I can be half the husband, father and friend we was to everyone that knew him. - Posted by: Mike Bays (Grandson ) on: Feb 17, 2016

  • Eric and I are not in Winnipeg at the moment, so unfortunately we will not be at the celebration of life for Uncle John. I would have enjoyed listening to the family reminisce and share their stories about his life. Uncle John was one of the good guys. I'm so sorry to know that he's gone. My condolences to Auntie Marj and the family. Love, Jacquie - Posted by: Jacquie and Eric Crone (niece) on: Feb 13, 2016
