SHIRLEY YVONNE COLE (nee MANNESS) June 16, 1927 - February 10, 2016 Surrounded by her family's love, Shirley passed away at home in Domain looking forward to joining her beloved husband Grenville, niece Diane and granddaughter Tanya in their eternal home in heaven. She was predeceased by her husband, Grenville (1994) of 47 years; parents Alfred and Inger Manness; sisters Doris, Adele and Florence; brother Don; and granddaughter Tanya. Cherished, loving memories will be kept by her children Marianne (Denis), Vernon (Lorilee), and Arlene (James); grandchildren Ryan (Cristina), Aidan, and Taylor (A.J.); and great-grandchildren Audrey and Olivia. Also mourning her loss are her brother Sidney (Helen) and many nieces and nephews. Shirley especially valued her longtime friendship with Carolyn and Bill Bumstead. Shirley married Thomas Grenville Cole on November 26, 1947 and took up residence on the family farm near Domain. Along with farm and family work, Shirley continued the legacy of her father with a lifelong dedication to the Domain community and Avonlea United Church. Joining the church choir at age 13, she went on to become the choir director for 25 years. Shirley loved participating in community dramas and musicals, eventually becoming the assistant director of the Domain Community Theatre. She became known far and wide in her role promoting community events and selling tickets. Connecting with the earth through gardening and yard work gave Shirley much joy and fulfillment. We will always remember her love of fashion and how every outfit she wore was accompanied by just the right pieces of jewelry. Shirley loved holiday family gatherings and dinners out to celebrate special occasions. She was always gracious, caring and welcoming at family events. She took time to ask about everyone's life and wellbeing and was always proud of her family's endeavours and accomplishments, big and small. In 2013, Shirley moved into a suite at the Waverly in Winnipeg and enthusiastically embraced new routines and activities. Her joie de vivre resulted in her becoming an Ambassador, welcoming newcomers. She greatly valued the friendship of Coralie Standing and the relationships she had with the staff at the Waverly. Her strong faith and sense of humour sustained her through life's challenges and during her recent months of illness. Well done, good and faithful servant. (Matthew 25:21) A Celebration of Shirley's Life will take place on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Thomson in the Park, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Avonlea Memorial Fund, Avonlea United Church, Domain, MB. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

  • Aunt Shirley will be greatly missed by everyone in Domain, from the Choir to the Drama Club to the Church Luncheon to the Legion Aux. Shirley was always ready to take on any challenge or to work on any project. We'll miss her very much. Please accept and pass on our deepest sympathy to Marianne, Denis, Vernon, Lori Lee, Arleen and all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. - Posted by: Rick & Wendy Manness (second cousin to Aunt Shirley) on: Feb 16, 2016

  • Aunt Shirley will always have a special place in our memories and heart. We will certainly miss her!! Our aunt had a tremendous pride, loyalty and commitment for the commumity of Domain, her lifelong home and sold our family many a ticket for Domain events whether they be the annual fall supper or a theatre production for which she was chief promoter and ticket seller. I personally will always remember the awesome red velvet cake topped with thick delicious white icing she made when our family was invited for dinner. Although we are away and unable to attend Aunt Shirley's funeral, we will be thinking of you and remembering all the great memories we have and ask our good Lord to give comfort and strength to Marianne, Vernon and Arlene and their loved ones during this most difficult time. May God bless you all. - Posted by: Ron and Judy Smith (Nephew) on: Feb 13, 2016

  • Shirley was always my youngest Aunt, full of life, laughter and fun. Not only did she always look like a fashion plate, but she was a beautiful person inside and out. She never lost interest in her extended family members including many of us who moved away from the area decades ago. Family, community, church, singing, theatre and a strong faith were so much a part of her world. As nephews and nieces, she kept in touch and we loved her. To Marianne, Vernon and Arlene, your partners and families, thank you for sharing her with us. She truly loved each of you. May Aunt Shirley rest in peace and rise in glory. - Posted by: Gary Magarrell (Nephew) on: Feb 13, 2016

  • So sorry to hear of my Aunt Shirley's passing. She was my 'young' aunt as she was only 12 older than me. I lived with aunt Shirley and my grandparents in the winter for gr 1 to 4. On stormy days she would walk me to school. No school closures. I was one of her flowers girls at her wedding. aunt Shirley sang at our wedding. I have great memories and will miss her.
