Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJEAN HARRIET STEEL September 1, 1920 - Winnipeg, Manitoba February 5, 2016 - Calgary, Alberta It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Jean Harriet Steel, aged 95 at Millrise Seniors Village, Calgary, AB on February 5, 2016. Jean was born in Winnipeg, MB on September 1, 1920 to John and Luella Martin. She was educated at Isaac Brock and Daniel McIntyre schools. Proceeding her graduation, Jean worked at the department of Veterans Affairs; and later at the Province of Manitoba working in several government departments, notably in the premiers office (then, The Honourable Sterling Lyons). Mom was very proud of that posting and her other proud moment was the pioneering of Hansard (note taking of the House of Debated in the Legislative Assembly in Manitoba). She had to be exceptionally efficient in shorthand to accomplish that task! Jean was an accomplished pianist. The piano was her pride and joy. As youngsters, my brother Jack and I remember many a neighbourhood party down in our Ebby Avenue rec room mom on the piano and other partygoers on the ukulele and fiddle. "Wasn't that a party!". Her other achievements and life joys was to play bridge, crochet, knit, sew, needlepoint, golf, curl, ceramics, gardening, and spending time at their Grand Beach cottage with her beloved Jerry. Before moving to Calgary, mom was a loyal member and volunteer of Harrow United Church for over 65 years. Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband Jerry of 56 years and her dear son Jack. She is survived by her daughter Marilyn (Gary) Cosgrove of Calgary; grandchildren, Bob (Angie) Steel of Winnipeg, Debbie (Parry) Chapman of Virden, Kelly (Doug) Dalton of Calgary, Sean (Karin) Cosgrove of Calgary, Tracy Walker of Winnipeg; and 12 great-grandchildren. Each of us holds a special memory of a dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mom is also survived by her sister-in-law Mary Dayment and three nieces Pat Tait of Winnipeg and Maureen and Valerie Curry of BC. Mom spent her remaining years in Calgary to be near her daughter. She struggled with dementia for several years, she is now in a better place and will be reunited with her Jerry and son Jack. Thank you to the nursing staff at Millrise Senior Village for their dedicated care during mom's residency. Cremation has taken place and by request there will be no service held. A private family gathering is planned in both Calgary and Winnipeg. Mom's final resting place will be with dad and in close proximity to where their son is buried. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com Jean, thanks for the memories! You are loved and will be missed.
