ELAINE MARILYN GOLDBERG 1930 - 2016 Elaine died peacefully at her home in Winnipeg on February 28, 2016, surrounded by those who loved her most. She is survived and will be deeply missed by her husband of 61 years, Percy Goldberg; four children - Hennie Corrin (Richard Corrin), Barbara Goldberg, Patrice Goldberg, Laurence Goldberg (Diane Spivak); seven grandchildren - Matthew Corrin, (Kate Corrin), Rachel Nedelec (Adam Nedelec), Adam Corrin, Jonathan Goldberg, Rebecca Goldberg, Eric Meche and Michael Goldberg; and four great-grandchildren - Annie and Whitney Corrin and Lyla and Charlie Nedelec; and her brother Paul Morton (Karen Morton), and will be sadly missed by her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Adele and Syd Standil, and by her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Rebecca Morton. Elaine lived her life fully and all in. She was born in Winnipeg in 1930 to Rebecca and Henry Morton. Her father died suddenly in 1951 when Elaine was 21 and her brother Paul was only 13. Elaine was especially close with her mother Beck and many of Beck's nine siblings. She cared for many of her aunts in their later years, a tradition of caring that she extended to all her family and friends. She and Percy met in the lobby of the Royal York Hotel before the 1953 Grey Cup game. They were married four months later and in less than five years they had four children. Family was always the most important thing in Elaine's life, and she spent many hours anticipating the needs of Percy, and her children and grandchildren, and planning wonderful meals, parties and activities - in Winnipeg, Winnipeg Beach and West Hawk Lake, and also in Longboat Key. Always active in the community, in 1991 Elaine was the originator of CancerCare Manitoba Foundation's Guardian Angel Benefit for Women's Cancer, a signature event for the Winnipeg community that is still running 25 years later. She also served on the Boards of CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, the St. Boniface Hospital and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Elaine was an elegant, kind and passionate woman, who loved a good laugh. Her life was made meaningful by many close friendships. She playing golf and tennis intensely, and was an avid sports fan her entire life. As her health declined, there were many people who stepped in to coordinate her care and make her time easier. The family would like to thank Mrs. Anna Friesen, as well as Maria Taflan, Edith Mendoza, Maryann Cuevas, Leonara Mamorno and Heather Yakamoski. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Shaarey Zedek synagogue, 561 Wellington Crescent, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Elaine's honour to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation (http://www.cancercarefdn.mb.ca/), Tel. (204) 787-4177.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I am so sad to know that Mrs. Goldberg is not in this world anymore. She had such an impact on my life and, although I have not seen her in decades, I think of her often. I was hired to be a nanny for the Goldberg children in the summers of 1967 and 1968 and also on weekends during those years on Waterloo St and Handsart Blvd. She was the greatest cook I know. When I left the Goldberg's and got married, two of the first cookbooks I bought were The Gourmet’s Guide to Jewish Cooking and Our Recipe Treasures from the Ramah Chapter of Winnipeg. I also cook recipes out of my traditional Mennonite Treasury cookbook but Mrs. Goldberg’s rare roasts, gefilte fish, her traditional baking, etc, were excellent. I still make her Tuna Surprises for Sunday lunch, just the way she taught me to make them, and my children make it for their own families. She showed me how to make a bed with hospital corners and how to set a lovely table. Her joy was her children and it showed in her meticulous training of me. God grant you his peace as you, Dr Goldberg, Hennie, Barbie, Pattie and Laurie, remember with love your very beautiful and talented wife and mother. I will continue you be thankful to her and remember her. - Posted by: Wally Regier Koslowsky (nanny to the Goldberg children) on: Nov 14, 2017

  • I grew up with the Goldberg children and knew Mrs Goldberg for the majority of my life. Remember her as a truly warm, friendly person who was soft spoken and just all around a good person. My deepest condolences to Henny, Barb, Patti and Laurie. I wish you peace during this difficult time and know from experience that as time goes on the wonderful memories of your mom will always make you feel warm inside - Posted by: Jay Averbach (friend) on: Apr 23, 2016

  • The success of the Guardian Angel Benefit is due in no small measure to the commitment and determination of Elaine. She established the first committee and set the priorities and tone that are still relevant today 25 years later. She was instrumental in raising awareness to the issues surrounding breast cancer in a time when the topic was not openingly discussed. Her support was crucial in the lives of so many . - Posted by: Jean Giguere (Friend ,tennis ,tennis partner member of the committee chaired by Elaine that established the Guar) on: Mar 01, 2016
